Talking Poll: How many of you have artistic backgrounds?

Just curious. I have never been that great of an artist and find it hard to work from scratch designing something. Give me a clipart resource and I can alter, change and come up with something decent. So my question is how many of u are artists and how many limp through it all like me...Since I'm new to the site I have no idea if I fell in with a bunch of pros (which judging by a lot of the artwork I may have) or if theres a lot of my types out there...

Nice idea! I've added a VBpoll for you! In answer to the question, though, I'm actually a pharmacist by day and use Photoshop to relax... so nope, my background is anything but artistic. In fact, I was terrible with art at school!

My mother was an artist and drew a lot. While I have interest in art I haven't done much of it but I still do it once in a while!

Notthing really of a background here. Just sort of picked it up as I went. Never took an art class before, and doing studies in math and AI now; so yeah. But the great thing about the art of the internet is that it has very little in the way of a formal background. Everyone is learning from others and you get an amazing variety of wroks. Probably my favorite medium out there.

I don't have any artistic backgrounds either. It's just something I thought was interesting and quickly picked up.

I don't have any background or education in art. I started as a music major then was in rock bands for years, until 1988 and that's when I started getting interested in computer graphics on a Commodore 64 (then an Amiga, an Atari, then finally the Mac). Now I make my living using Photoshop but, no, I don't consider myself an artist.

Smile You are all making me feel better!

Hey glad to see I'm in the same boat as most of you. No formal education, just goofing off and seeing what happens!

Most of my family are really into drawing and painting so i kind if picked it up(more drawing than painting as i dont like working with it) i tended to sit and draw manga charicters off the top of my head to the point of i was doing scenes, i may scan some in and post them at some point but its been years and ill have to find them out.
But most of it is just peices i've slapped together off the top off my head or thats been inspired by something ive seen and i play with it till i find something that works or that i like

Yes! I'm a photographer & digital artist, going to attend the School of Visual Arts in Manhatten starting next summer. My father was a commerical artist and did a lot of cartoon/animation work.

Talking new 2

I'm not exactly what you'd call an artist but I have got some talent in the drawing department and general artistic capabilities. I paint alot and make jewelery but when I see some work done by other people it can be quite daunting. All I can say is Keep working at it and never give up on your own abilities. You will plesently surprise yourself.

Heck I have trouble drawing a straight line, I couldn't draw a figure if it only consisted of a couple of circles. I use Photoshop to mess around with all kinds of photos, and now doing targeting rings for the on line game Everquest. Since I am a retired Battalion Fire Chief I do some photos for the guys I worked with but I am still learning and have a long way to go before I ever become proficient.

16 years ago during my final GCSE Art lesson, my teacher asked why I wasn't going to study Art to 'A' level as I had potential. Instead ended up taking (and failing) the sciences and maths...
Roll forward a decade and a bit, and I've decided to become a freelance web developer only to find that I enjoy the artistic side (the designing rather than the coding) and have spent too long relearning everything I once knew. Even now I lack the originality that I once had, so everything I do looks so "fake".
Time will tell if I ever find that spark, but I am enjoying the learning experience.
