What motivates you?

Lately, i've been having a hard time doing anything. Like a giant writers block, but for my computer. I mean, if i just had the motivation to sit at my compter for like, 3 hours, i could finish the admin system that i'm working on, but no, i cant find the motivation to sit at my computer and do anything any more... can you guys tell me what motivates you, and maybe i can get started or sumthing....

What can I say? I think that we all go thru times tht we just go duh and can't seem to get it together. When that happens to me there are several different things that I do; go read a book; thumb thru my designer mags; steal something from my daughter (she is great artist); and surf the net. Usually one of those will give me an idea. If not---I wait, it will come.---bedlam123

Happens to me too but I don't get stress from it. I work when I feel like it. Sometimes it can be as little as for 5 minutes and sometimes it can take the whole day. If you feel like you "have" to code then it's time to stop. Like enigmatic said. Do something else for a change. When I get tired of coding I usually do some 3d modelling or play with PS. I usually have these times when I feel like coding but then I have times when I don't. Changes every week or so and that's why my software's are getting updated so slow

Yeah, definitely don't let it get you down. I watch anime and check out graffiti pieces for inspiration. I remember a book suggesting that writing a few pages of nothing every morning is a good way to do it. It also mentioned that driving long distances can help because of the flow of images you pick up while you're driving.

You can borrow my daughter ANYTIME for inspiration. Eww, that didn't sound just right, did it? Well, the mags I get are as follows: Dynamic Graphics; PRINT; The BIG Picture; Element K; Paper Direct; Presentations; Creative Designer; studio photography & design, and a few others. Not all of these deal exclusively with one software package. They deal with design. I go thru them and look for new colors, new layouts, etc. Then I sit down at my computer and try to duplicate what I have seen. Usually by the time I get half-way thru, I have a lot more ideas. Listen, almost any kind of mag can give you inspiration, if you look at it the right way, even a Sears catalog! Give it a try and remember what the others have said---so what, be patient, it is part of the creative process. Go out, take a walk, go to a concert, walk the mall, participate in life-----it will come.

I like games coz they motivate me. When i can't sit down to do some work i prefer playing some computer games for an hour after which i am psyched up enuff to do some coding. You should try it sometime.

Smile Take a break

Get some sunlight or go do something totally unrelated to what you want to do. The creative flash will come again. My personal problem is I have a severe case of undiagnosed ADHD (kidding) but i tend to have so many things I wanna try and do that i start 20 projects and finish maybe 3...i go back over time and tinker with them on and off, improving or playing.

Aye same here.

I also love to visit library and do reference. Most of the time, books related to design or even magazines would help to motivate me.

The big rock on my photoshop teachers desk...seriously, she's got a big old chunk of sandstone on her desk. But it's the 'magic teaching stick' that's her normal weapon of motivation. ^ ^ a bit more serioulsy though, listening to music, and talking with friends motivate me. sometimes my mind gets motivated all on it's own, and demands that I artify random things, random things that don't help me with the projects I need to get done, though...silly mind of mine. I also draw and doodle alot from animals books, especially reptiles. but then I get distracted by the words, and all the pretty pictures, and my art is forgotten...

Talking

I believe that running out things to design about, or not been able to come up with something "new" is probably one of the worst feeling a designer can go through, many times i have jusst "blanked" and i have no idea of what to create, and clients ask for originality, and i have found out that there is actually a very easy way to solve this problem(at least they work for me ) SMOKE A BIG FAT DUBBIE relax and listen to some good old rock ....naah just kidding although i must say i helps, but anyways, let you client do the work for you, ask him, what do u think we should do, what are your ideas, and believe it or not they always come up with something that might sound dumb and stupid, but while they are talking you start genereting ideas and brainstorming. i hope this helps!!

I've just been through the same block (as everyone else has once in a while i suppose) usually i get on my moterbike and go for a ride or five and when i get back (sometimes after a couple of days) sunshine, trees, the sea and wind in my face has blown out the black and creativity coems back.. Don't underestimate the power of sunlight
Now i have the ideas but am instead coping with a shoulder that has constant pain from using the computer too much and apparently in the wrong way
I rather enjoy the mag ComputerArts and ComputerARts Projects, even if it's tutorials i like to see what comes out of other ppl's minds...
