Spam - I'm not talking about the food!
What's your take on spam? How can we stop it? Do your spam filters in your email client even work? How much do you get on average in a single week?
Is this what you look like when you see tons of spam in your inbox >>
Well, let's start the discussion...

Well, I personally have a MAPS DNS-based spam blackhole list programmed into the server, as well as Spamassassin (an algorithmic spam detector), and Spamnet (a distributed network - like napster, but for spam detection) installed into my copy of Outlook. The result? I get around 1 spam message every two days - the rest are automatically filtered out... and it hardly ever kills useful e-mails. In fact, its never deleted one sent personally to me, just a few newsletters (which are a kind of spam anyway).
Yup, i'm definately happy to be rid of the 'make your penis even larger' adverts....

I've never gotten any real spam!
Im acually quite happy that i'm not in the trouble that so many people seem to be in. I guess someday i'll have to dish out some money for an antispam program, but i hope its not in the near future...
Well anyways, I remember i once set a hotmail account up for my dad (this was quite a while ago), and he started getting major spam within the first week or so. He was quite mad.

Honestly I don't get much spam either. It's just, I've heard a lot of complaining about it lately.
I wanted to know how you guys felt about the topic.

Personally, I don't get that much spam. I am pretty clean now, and use no spam blockers, but mayb if I start getting spam I will.
Spammers on forums are worse than spam e-mail..

You can be rest assured that I wont tolerate any spam on these forums. Not only is Vbulletin quite resilient to automatic spambots, but should one get through i'm sure we'll be able to deal with it with a few deftly placed mySQL commands. God bless the creator of wildcards... =]

I was speaking more in terms of spammers who come through and post one word replies up and down the forum just to see some number under their name increment slowly by one. Seems childish and mindless to me and I don' enjoy reading it. Spambots don't do too much damage anymore, but these mindless children can.

That shouldn't be too hard to combat either - i'll see about introducing a minimum word count for new posts (something sensible like 6-10 words) this weekend. For all the others that slip out of the net, a little manual administration never goes amiss...

That's actually a good idea I haven't thought about. A post limit. Good thinking.

Yeah, I had one on the clan forums I ran, 7-10 still doesn't do THAT much because people go around sayin, "Yeah, I agree." - "What's up?" - "Cool, nice job."
I hate spammers!

on most forums, people dont worry about spamming.. but it is a precaution... since m0g is active, all he needs are some moderators, most people stop spamming when they get a nice little warning from an active moderator.

Very true, most of them just need a rude awakening to the rules.
