sound card problem?

i need a bit of help with a sound card problem, im using an integrated sound card on my computer, and the speaker out port works fine because i use it every day with my speakers etc.

i want to record some stuff, and i have a microphone which i have used a few times on my computer downstairs, but when i plug it into my computer and try to record it records almost inaudibly you have to turn it up to full to hear the playback. i haven't tested my line in port...

is this a problem with my sound card or my microphone? i don't have any other mic's to test it with at the moment...

if it's a sound card problem what can i do to fix it?

Hi scrowler

Are you trying to record your voice or something else to the computer,
when i'm copying records to the computer i always use a small mixer as this gives you more control of what your doing and in some cases using a microphone can pick up a lot of backgroung noice thus having to turn your settings up .
Also what kind of microphone are you using a hand held mic or a tie clip mic or even one of these for web broadcast .
You are using the mic input and not a "line" input (i know it sounds stupid but ppl have done that before)
I would say check your line in ports settings on the mic input on your soundcard in "sounds and audio devices"
Let me know if you get sorted or not and ill try and help more

im planning on recording some acoustic guitar music, probably through the line in port. i'll be using a decent quality acoustic music microphone for the vocals and drums, and straight from my guitar's pre-amp to line in for the guitar so there shouldnt be much background feedback in that... it's the drums im worried about

ok i would sugest getting a small mixer then you can put all your instruments into the mixer and have complete control over them before they go to the computer and then your only gonna use your line in for your recording.
I use a mixer in this way for vinyl and the use of a mini disk .

i probably don't have a big enough budget to get a mixer for this project, i had intended on using my computer as a mixer as i would not be playing all instruments at the same time anyway
