I was actually looking for one of these for myself a few weeks ago and never found one that I liked so maybe someone can find that one I haven't found yet

I use something called The Font Thing. I think it should suit your purposes.

Do these programs only work for installed fonts? I'm looking for one that will view a folder of fonts and display them.

the MyFonts program shows you both installed or not installed, with ever you wish. And helps you keep them organized and has a meter of how full your installed fonts folder is.

Creating fonts usually involves LOTS of time and a dedicated font creation package (all of which are very expensive). My advice is to just download fonts you need, as most of them are free. If you REALLY want to get into font creation, though, search back in our news - there was a release of a few programs a little while back which may interest ya...
