Question Put ur website to top 10 on Google with a specified keyword.Legal or not?

My friend asked me about this 1 hour later,i was thinking about and got confuse.
He tol me his company will soon buy a technology that can make a customer`s website placed on the top 10 page in Google search with a specified keywords.

For example :
- ur site is www.somename.com
- and when you type "somename" there are tons of websites that contain somename dot com that can match with Google search.
- So that technology`s job is to bring ur www.somename.com to be on the top page wit keyword "keyword".

But this sound much like hacking,i dont know if it is illegal or not???
Google doesnt know about this.

Thx for any replies.

Nope - its not illegal. Many companies out there make LOTS of cash telling customers that they can mess with keywords to get their client's sites to the top of search rankings. Google has their own highly-secret algorithm that assigns things like pagerank, though, so all tactics are mainly aimed at interpreting how that system works (and Google ain't telling anyone PRECISELY how it works! ).

Disreputable tactics like link-pages, multiple entrances, etc arent ILLEGAL either - just annoying. Google has ways of detecting these tactics too, and if you are caught they'll just erase your site & domain from their database... permanently!

This involves the practice of S.E.O, or called Search Engine Optimization. My company makes it's revenue off of it. It is a highly questionable practice, as search engines like Google tend to be top secret on how they deal with site rankings.

To my knowledge, that is not illegal, just highly unprobable.

I guess site rankings have to do with how many other sites host your url. This will boost your web rank. That is all I really know.

I remember when biorust first started, we barely could be recognised on google, but now that mammoth sites such as www.blender3d.org link to us, we have a much higher page rank. It is probably due to all the folks mirroring our tutorials and I thank them very much!

I think meta tags may also effect how high high your ranking is. I think you could also drop google a few dollars a month and they will upgrade your ranking as well. I know some companies, which have done this.
