Open Source Operating Systems
Right now I am running off of Knoppix, which is a Linux on CD Distribution, since the death of my HD at 3am this morning..
Has anyone here ever intalled or made use of linux for any reason, I think you would be surprised in the results... I will wait until I get some replies to tell the truth behind everyones answers
M0g: You may know where I am going with this.. but shhhh...

Ahhhh! Did you know that Red Hat Linux isn't free anymore? I wanted to try it.
I personally haven't tried Linux but it's one of my goals.

It has to be free.. licensing of linux, you should be able to download the iso's at their site..

Knoppix is real good for beginners, all it requires is one CD, no HD space is needed.. and if you screw something up, just restart the computer and it works again, if you are new to linux, it is one of the best.

Well, it does have Gimp, which is the GNU Image Manipulation Program.. and is comparable with Photoshop, but with a little learning curve. Linux does support Blender as a 3D application, even though I have never used it..
Believe it or not, if you have ever used FTP, 99 out of 100 times, you would have used Unix or Linux, most of the web servers in the world are Unix or Linux ran, Apache is actually made for Unix systems, with just a port to windows..
Personally, I have now installed Red Hat next to Windows XP, I like Red Hat basically because it is the most widely used distro.. here is a freshly installed system, please ignore the convo windows..

It does have a better shell then Windows.. which is worth it in my case..

Oh, it *IS* free, but they really hide the link to the iso's well, and try and palm off one of their support packages + distro to you instead. A bit dishonorable, but I've seen worse...

It was stated on TechTV (forget which program, maybe the Screensavers?) that they were going to stop making it free.
Go to http://www.techtv.com and look for the article. It may not be The Screensavers TV show though. I forgot which one it was.

Ahhh, they may mean Redhat Enterprise. Its a really heavy modification of Redhat, so its not covered by the Linux usage requirements I guess. Still a bit dishonorable, but i'll wait until I hear something more concrete than TechTV before slating it...

TechTV Rules
Anyway, starting early next year they will stop the Red Hat Linux series, and will be introducing the Fedora system, which is basically Red Hat 10.. however, they do hide the links for the iso's, mainly because the GPL, which is what Linux is licensed under states that the program is supposed to be free, but support, packaging, and marketing can be added as a cost...
Red Hat makes a point on support, so that is how they make money, a little dishonest, but not as bad as Apple or even Microsoft, which try to take and hold their markets..

Yes, via dual booting, most linux systems will install either Lilo or Grub, which allow to boot into either one. They are both very simple to use and work well..
Linux cannot run windows programs natively, i.e on its own, but there is a program called WINE, which will emulate and run windows programs, at least some of them, it has been tested to work with office, although I have never tried it myself.

To be honest, I chose with red hat to not install a boot loader, since this is a family computer and my father would be totally lost with a boot manager.. lol
To boot into red hat on my system, during the installation I asked to have a boot disk created, it works well, and to get into linux, just put the floppy in... otherwise it will boot into windows without a problem..
Again, for people looking to switch, but are unsure, just use knoppix for a while, and see if you want to make the switch, as I mentioned above, Knoppix is great for beginners, since if you screw something up, just restart the computer and everything works again...

Digital, what happens if you lose the floppy? No Knoppix?
Right now I'm using the family computer, I doubt I'd be able to install it here. Hopefully, once I get my business going I can purchase my own computer and but all the 'junk' I want on it. Me and my dreams.
