::cries:: It's timing me out!

Okay here's my problem.

I'll be online right? Typically I'll have my computer and modem on for about five-eight hours at a time, I might not be in a browser window, but my modem will be on and the whole two yards.

So anyway, I could either be surfing, or signing in, but after that five-eight hour period, I CANNOT SURF OR SIGN ON.

Anyhting. AIM, Yahoo, Explorer. Nothing. It just won't let me. All wires are fine, I resest the modem, and everything. WHAT is wrong?

(rebooting fixes it but it is an inconvenience for me)

Things that might be the cause:

I was playing around with the Settings, Internet Options, Connections thing. I removed AOL. This I did, AFTER the problem.

It happens after my dad signs on to AOL. Mind you, this is after about four, five hours. And has not always been the case, but it does seem like a little bit to much of a coincidence.

I did look at my modem and inspect the wires. I checked out it's status on the websites it gives on the bottom, and it did say it failed a test (I forgot, I think it said the ATM one)

And my computer may have a virus or two (currently debating which one is better, getting it fixed at Comp USA or Getting Norton, you may answer this two )

Well any ideas would be helpful, I have a SpeedStream and NO there are NOT any restrictions that were set up because it works for no one remember!

I used to have a modem that had a similar problem. 90% of the time it behaved just fine, but occasionally it was almost as if the hardware on the modem 'crashed' and it wouldnt respond to ANYTHING until I did a total system reboot. I tried everything to fox it, including an OS change, but nothing worked. In the end, I just got a replacement modem.... that worked!

Are you sure the ISP isn't killiny your session? With Dial up, some ISPs kill the sess after a few hours! It saves server mem or something!

If not, it could be your phone line, OR (I had this problem) you could be connecting too fast! If you stick your connection speed up to 115k or something, the server may reject you after a while! Take it down and see if that works!

If not, call your ISP!

Well, if the ISP kills the line the modem can usually redial with little difficulty. It COULD be a line or a modem technical fault equally. I doubt ringing the ISP would help tho (UK ISPs are generally as useful as a can of spam). Maybe try approaching your phone company and get them to test the line for noise, etc?

Some new info. has been brought to light...

I can no longer user DSL. I called a technician, he looked at it from his computer at SNET HQ, and told me to press Reset onthe back. That was my most physical action and now it just does not work.

He says the connection is fine.

He claims my CP Usage is high for an XP (he claims 6% on average while mine easily break 15% with no programs) and this is affecting my compuer.

Dial Up works.

Rebooting no longer fixes the issue.

ahmed thanks for your comments but i'm so new to this, changing unknown settings to me would be death all together lol.

No connections were changed. I'm just really tired of this now.

Fixed (thank God)

Somehow, my computer believes that I was using an LAN and telied on that as the connection. So I just made a miniport

Which is something I should have looked into, since i was cruising around that window for the longest time.

Anyway, although it does blip out occasionally, everything seems good. Now if I can figure out how to re allow my AIM to connect and unblock it, it will be a good day XD
