Flash Help

I'm looking to do a simulated 360 degree product viewer in flash for our site, but am not terribly sure where to begin. I am hoping someone knows of a good tutorial or inexpensive component that can help me do this. I know enough to be able to place the images into a Flash movie and play them on a loop, the problem comes with trying to get the ability to control the play direction, stop the animation etc.

I'd like to do something similar to this, although I don't necessarily care about the zoom:

Gallery of Our 3D Viewers

Anyone have any advice/ideas? I've scoured Google for hours and haven't found any solutions that aren't either poorly done or very expensive.

I will look for a tut for this but don't recall seeing one... worst case... build the flash file with the images... give me a link to it (the .fla file) and couple of days to get to it and I can whip it up for you and give it back so you can look at how it was built... would likely take me a bit to explain

if this helps immediately... look for tut's on creating a Flash slide show... you could use that example probably to build most of it and only change it so that the images change on rollover etc to create the illusion of rotation

Yeah,

I think that you should make a slideshow in flash with a timer effect (every 1/24 second it will go the the next pic) and a rotation bar, so that the rotation can also be set manually.

If you have the pics for me I will show you the code that I am thinking of Or let synthetic do it, either way.... we need to friggin pics

Ow and the zoom part is pretty simple really. Just make sure all the pics are a bit bigger than the actual 360 presentation. And if you "zoom" you just zoom the image back to its normal size....

Edit:

that is how to make a flash slideshow

Unleash, I took a closer look at that slideshow you suggested, but I'm concerned in that it loads images between each slide. Would this be something easy to avoid? I'd be looking for a solution that loads all images before the video starts so the trasition between images is smooth and as unnoticable as possible.

yeah... that can be accomplished too... it will just make the .swf bigger and add little initial load time which you may want to add a little progress movieclip while it loads

I am busy this eve teaching photo imaging to a friend but will have time tomorrow eve to have a look if you would like

Hey stiney,

I see synthethic has already answered the question, but still since my name was in front of it

The loading of all those images can indeed be done up front. Instead of loading all the images into the same variable, you will probably have to load all the images at the same time.....

So that it is indeed neccesary to add a progress bar, so that the user can acctually see how long it is going to take.... Making such a thing is quite simple to accomplish.

I have some time tommorrow (all day long ) So I will show you what I mean (code + images )

hmm, its a bit tougher than I thought

But Its going pretty well right now, I just need to add the zoom and rotate handles. And than test the whole damn thingy

I made a preloader that loaded everything at the same time(one image after the other). So I have that part covered already(I just need to test the damn thing)

OW, its all AS2.0 based, so I dont know if that is a problem?

In my quest for all of this I found a pretty slick looking product that is due to be released in January. Don't know the cost yet, and it's certainly beyond what I would spend for something, but it's pretty cool just the same. Thought I'd share:

Photosmile Lightbox 5000

wow... I had seen larger rigs made to do this job but first time I had seen a box designed to do it as a commercial product. Very interesting... sadly... it looks like it only supports Canon cameras though and I bet only Windows OS. Pretty cool though and yep... it would make shooting things like your project really easy and very precise it seems. I didn't see any info on cost though... I imagine its not very cheap.
