ST's Aquarium Adventures Continued

Well, I am kinda bummed today. I must have an issue with my water because this morning I got up to feed fish before work and Red the Betta was sick. He had some white stuff on his snoot, color was bad and he wasn't swimming much. When I got home.... he was dead and attached to the power filter inlet. Never thought I would miss a fish but I really liked him. He had character and was the prettiest Betta the pet shop had. Glad I got a couple of pics of him before he passed.

The rest of the fish seem ok. I am going to pet shop tonight and have them test my water. I don't want to lose anymore fish.

Probably won't replace Red for awhile. I am thinking about just getting a 10 gallon to put on the stand under the 20 gallon and putting a new Betta in that by himself but it will be some time later this year before I can afford that.

Sounds like ich. I'm sorry to hear he died; we lost a goldfish or two to that ourselves. You might want to get some ich medication and give a light dose, just in case.

Sorry to hear that, Synth. My mom had an Angel fish that she loved so much that when it passed she dried it and made it into a Christmas ornament.

Now that I think about it, that is kinda weird.

    sorry to hear that synth.
my guppies do fine with tap water and an occasional belated filter cleaning. I really ought to take better care of them, but they still do fine anyhow.

Actually found out I was over feeding. When Betta was by himself, I had noticed he was picky eater and only ate what was floating on the top of the water. If it fell, he wouldn't mess with it. Combine this with me feeding 3 times a day... the food built up in the gravel and my nitrates were sky high.

So, I have had to cut back on feeding and do a couple of water changes. I completed the second water change today and tank seems to be clearing up. I will go back to pet shop later this week and have them test my water again and see if nitrates are back in order. If water gets back to normal, I am getting another Clown Loach to help clean the gravel. Though fish in there now do pretty good job of getting most of the food I feed them.

Moods... I agree... that is kinda weird lol... reminds me of those that have their dog or cat stuffed and put on display in their house when they pass on.

Bettas are great fish. I've had several, over the years (I always seem to have one whenever I have a tank set up).
Contrary to what has become popular belief, they actually LIKE to swim (I won't go into a rant about those little 1/2 cup jars they try to sell you to keep them in, as I'm sure you know what I mean, anyway).

I've been thinking about setting up my tanks again, sometime soon. My 55 and 75 have been sitting empty since my last fish died, a couple of years ago. I've always liked the idea of just a few, little fishies in a big tank. The most awesome tank I've seen was a well-planted 90 gallon with just a school of Neon Tetras in it. They had plenty of room to move and nobody to bother them - they were in fishy heaven. Big fish are cool, too, though. I had a Citrunellum (Red Devil), about 15 years ago, that was about the size of a kid's baseball glove. Being a Cichlid, he had oodles of "personality". When he was mad, he would go around and knock things over and spit gravel at the glass - when he was happy, you could actually see him smile. I also had a Clarius Angolensis (African Walking Catfish) that someone had bought for their aquarium but gave him to me after he killed off most of their other fish. He got out of his tank, one day, and, when I went to pick him up, he squirmed and the barb in his fin split my finger wide open - it took days to heal.

Speaking of jumping out of the tank, I once had a Betta that spent nearly half an hour on the floor before I found him. I had to pull the errant cat hairs off of him then pushed him back and forth, in the water, for a couple of minutes, to get his gills working, again. He lived about a year and a half after that (which is about the natural life expectancy of Bettas).

    Okay..'nuff sed!

Yeah... I miss my Betta... he had character. I might get another later though. I do feel sorry for all those kept in cups for a home... its like keeping a dog in a cage barely big enough to move.

Wow... didn't realize they would actually jump out of the water.

On the topic... my good friend who got me most of my fish added 3 albino Kory Catfish to help keep my gravel clean of uneaten food. They are kinda weird looking... pink with pink eyes and almost translucent bodies but they seem to do a nice job of clean up
