lately, I have been spending a bit of time organizing my workshop in my garage. I ended up with a bunch of tools from somebody who didnt want them and what started out as "finding a place to put them" ended up in me creating a pretty awesome workspace for myself.
i hung my dremmel rotary tool on the wall within easy reach with its flexable extention on, so all i have to do is grab the wand and turn it on.
yesterday, i took apart an old computer and scavenged the power supply. i mounted that under my workbench and ran some wires in a loom to the top edge of the bench, and into a set of those push button wire holders like on speakers. and a toggle switch to turn it on. i can now test 6 and 12 volt accessories.
on the three walls around my work bench, i have hung all the large tools, hammers, saws, levels etc. next to the bench i have my grinder and polishers. and in a cabinet below that i have my welder. on the wing wall (its just a short outcropping next to the workbench, along with the tools i mounted an "explosion proof switch" that a buddy mailed me. i wired it up to turn on and off my air compressor thats on the other side of the wall with a cabinet above for all the air tools. later, i will post some pics or maybe even a video tour of it.

the duct tape to actual seat material ratio reached critical mass and I couldnt take it anymore. I took apart an old pair of black jeans, and made a new seat cover. now i have a nice new denim seat.

As I was cleaning up, I found some polishing compound and gave it a go on one of the engine panels (they were a dingy aluminum color) and had some acceptable results. so, I set to work pulling off all the panels and polishing them on my polishing wheel. now it looks all shiny.

next I have (want) to polish the aluminum wheel hubs and the forks. but that will have to wait until i can get a dremmel attachment to get the small, hard to reach places.

ok so as most of you are aware I have a motorcycle that is 35 years old, and luck be the reason that it still runs. sometimes i cant figure out how.

lately, since it warmed up out here in nevada, it hasnt run as well as it should. several removal and what i thought to be complete cleanings of the carbuerator only made things worse. even though i put things back the way that they were, minus dirt particles and gunk. the other day i took it off to clean it "one last time" before committing to professional help. This is what I found:

( a quick lesson an carbeurator mechanics to those that may not understand. imagine a carbureator as one of those old squeeze bulb perfume atomizers. as air passes over a submerged tube it draws the liquid up through the tube and vaporizes it out thru the nozzle.
now a carb has more tubes like that of various size and function but lets just consider the tube i was takling about on the atomizer. normally there is a hole that leads from the resivoir in the carburator (bowl) to a hollow bolt called a jet. the jet controls how much fuel can flow into the "vaporizer" tube. that "vaporizor" tube also has a flow control on it which would be referred to as the throttle.) lesson finished.
heres what happened:

some backwoods mechanic before me removed the jet assembly completely. having finished with that, a regular bolt was used to replace it.
then, since gas was leaking out around the threads, they took a lead .22cal bullet and plugged the hole that leads to the jet from the bowl with it.

I dont know how i rode 3300 miles with the equivialent of a 100% clogged a main jet. the only fuel it was getting was through the other, more secondary, holes and jets.

anyhow, i quickly fashioned a plug to keep gas from leaking out of the carb but still allowing it to flow where it was supposed to for a change and put it back on. runs much more powerfully now. has some real scoot.

now all i have to do is track down and get the right part.

so, yesterday my old co-worker and I went on out annual trip to the pma show.

so, yesterday my old co-worker and I went on out annual trip to the pma show.
PMA | PMA 09

all the new stuff, software, and assessories in one big place. plus a chance to talk to talk to the company reps about equipment, troubleshooting etc.

among the things i got this year was a lenscap that doubles as a white balance filter. kinda handy.
I also found out that samsung is planning a dslr/point and shoot hybrid. details were still sketchy but the idea was to have the ccd sealed like in a point and shoot, but offer lensing comprable to most dslr cameras.

I was kinda bummed though that I wasnt able to find a wired shutter control for my mavica this year. although there was a plethora of wireless ones for other models.

this year we just checked out all the exhibits, learned a bit about some of the new things on the way. Usually we check see a lecture about pshop techneques or something similar. sadly, this year was kinda weak reguarding software handouts. the first year i went i made out like a fat rat. for the first time this year I also didnt bother to have the printer reps do a "sample print" of some of my work at 24x36
many of the major companies like adobe and corel just werent there this year. and the give aways were kinda thin this year. I blame it on the economy. I did get a nice lenscloth.

I also got a chance to view bunches of "professional" and "amatuer/student" photographs in galleries throughout the show. I walked away with a new confidence in my skills as an artist/photographer. one of the winners in the student catagory was a staff member at some photography school. his pic was an overhead view of a coyote that had washed down a riverbed during a storm and was now bones and fur and skin mixed with sand. ****, I can do that...
I would have to say that I have seen work here by everyone that i know as a regular submitter that would have been way better than most of the "professional" catagory.

all in all, it was still really fun. I just hope it gets better next year. if you (dear reader) ever get the chance to attend, it is well worth the $50 for a day pass. next year I want a biorust shirt to wear when i attend. (hint hint M0g!) a patch or sticker would be cool too.

This weekend I decided to try an experiment. Magenta, my iguana, has always been very well behaved in my car. she seems to like seeing things go by and the whole travel thing. (and my old iguana used to ride on my arm, while my arm was out the window in my car, on the freeway (not to worry, she was wearing a leash/harness)) well it was Saturday and she was getting restless in her cage. the weather was beautiful outside and it was a good time to take her to the park to run around a bit. I put her on my shoulder and went outside and climbed on my motorcycle. flipped up the kickstand and kicked it over. I fully expected Magenta to bail. instead, she just looked at me as if she were expecting to go someplace. so I drove off. carefully, at first, then faster. soon we were scooting down the road at 30 mph. she was just looking ahead tasting the air with her tongue occasionally. boy, did we get some strange looks. so there it is, my iguana loves to ride on a motorcycle. I never would have believed it myself.

this week I found the website for my graduating class of high school. I read about all the people that I used to remember, saw how they turned out. I'm kinda feeling as left out as I did in school.
they all seem to have grown up and done things with their lives. (doctors, accountants, etc.) now I realize that I have done things with my life as well, that I'm a project engineer for a precast company, and I have had a hand in making or designing parts for almost every casino facade on the Vegas strip. (ooh I just made myself feel better)
It just seems like I always see other adults as "grownups" even though they are my own age. and somehow seeing the people who were my classmates all grown up, talking about all the good times that they had in school, made me realize what a total wallflower I was in school.

oh well, they're people too. they have their problems and worries, just like me. the only difference is that they hide it.

I have learned in my life that most of the people that I see as "better off than me" only have that house, or nice car or pasma tv or whatever because they carry a large debt. they have mortgages, and car payments, and credit card bills. It makes me feel better that I don't. I own everything that i have straight out. if I cant afford it, I just don't buy it until I can.
so anyhow, thanks for letting me get that off my chest. I feel better now.

ok, so we had a nice storm blow thru nevada this weekend. sustained 40 mph winds led it in. but not before blowing off a chunk of my garage roof surfacing material. so there i was, up on it, in the wind, finding out the hard way that my roof had a weak spot. up to my waist in a new hole. ok. patch that QUICK with some plywood, cover it with some tarp. nail it all down in the wind.
thankfully, it didnt rain until the next day, and it hasnt leaked where i patched it. NOOOOO, it leaked somplace else. so there i was again monday, in the rain with that sticky, tar patch goo, patching that leak.
thankfully it is only the garage. so as long as I get on the full repair quickly, (and I do have a plan) it wont cause any real problems.

after that it was time to cut up a bunch of firewood and cover all the dry wood with another tarp so that if the rain continued, I would have enough dry wood to last until the sun dried up the rained on wood in a day or two.

it didnt rain that much because most of it fell as snow before it got to my area. that made for a cold ride in this morning. 41 degrees when i left
oh, yeah, I got my motorcycle endorsement so now I can ride to work.

(sing to "i wanna be sedated" by the ramones)

i cant feel my fingers,
i cannot feel my nose,
hurry hurry hurry,
before it starts to snow
oh noo no no, ooh ohh!
brrrr, brrrr, brrr brrr
brrr brrrr, brrrr, brrr brrr
its too cold for riding.
a friend of mine gave me their old pc. its waaay newer than my old one. 2.6ghz and 760 mb of ram. I was running a 900 mhz machine before.
spent some of my morning with a cup of coffee in hand, formatting and reinstalling windows, pshop, autocad, and swapping in my slave drive. put all my personal files onto the slave and then put them onto the new pc. this time it was EASY. all my files, except programs have one main folder (I call it dave's files), with subfolders inside that(pictures, sounds, music, etc...). this includes all the sounds i use and my settings and wallpapers etc. one folder to copy. no hunting around looking for all my stuff.

my old pc is now shelved in the closet for emergency. still with its harddrive. ready to go at a moments notice.

today was a rainy day here. so I am making potato soup from scratch, and will be eating it from a bread bowl by the fireplace. (envy me)

I have some pics to put up in the gallery, so im gonna go forth and do that.

well thats all thats new here.

Remember kids: the boogeyman needs love too. blow a kiss through the closet door, you'll be glad you did.

I then (with the enthusiasm that only sheer boredom can render) looked over ALL the blogs here. go figure that the fireplace blog is the current record holder. not that I care or anything at all, I figured that moods or stiney, even unleash would all have more views especially with the dropship wip.
those blogs are with substance. I just tend to talk a-lot without saying anything.

After spending the weekend e-mailing a rescue clinic we managed to find a new Iguana.
they said they were calling her "creature". when I picked her up it was clear that at some time she had been in a bad home. her tail had been broken and is growing back, she seems to have boken some toes, but thats normal.
the people that were rescuing her were really nice and knowledgeable. and they reduced the "adoption fee" (its a fancy word for saying, "if your going to adopt this pet, you gotta pay for some of our expenses") to accomodate my finances. although sometimes its the same as buying the pet. in this case it was to support thier work.

for some reason, my wife and I both stuck on a line from the end theme of the RHPS and the word creature ("frank has made and, lost his creature. oh oh oh oooooo... at the late night, double feature, picture show.")

anyhow that made it logical to name her Magenta, since she is green.
(we love being contrary. we once have an all white cat named "spot")
anyhow. heres a pic of the new darling.
shes quite the little piggy and seems very laid back.
spent about an hour at work with her before going home and she just chilled on my desk, and did some poking around.

she rode on the back of the car seat after getting her (she did not want to go into the box)

plenty of free time lately and I have just been wasting it. it's just that its hot out here and it's so comfy inside! The television beckons with its soothing flicker, and I am feeling uninspired.
no point in packing up all my gear, and going outside in the heat for a drive with no a/c unless i have to. mebbe today i will do some ps work.

Garcie, my iguana was in bad times.
when i picked her up she seemed weak, un coordinated, and disoriented.
she couldnt hold herself upright, and seemed to be
within 3 hours she was gone.
I think she had a stroke.

I wont go into details, but I'm glad I was there with her.
:upset:
