Er...OK. Guy Fawkes Night marks the anniversary of the occasion when the Gunpowder Plotters planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I (5th November 1605). Guy Fawkes was in charge of executing the plot but was discovered before he could actually light the fuse. He was subsequently tortured to reveal the names of his co-conspirators and then sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
The celebration is usually marked by the burning of an effigy of Fawkes on a bonfire, letting off of fireworks and eating delicacies such as bonfire toffee, parkin, baked potatoes and toffee apples.
Hope that's explained it for ya!

Um, so is the burning of the Fawkes effigy because he was the leader of the insidious plot, or because he failed to blow up Parliament?

I guess it depends on whether you're a Royalist or a Republican...
