Spring!

Posted 03-15-2008 at 11:01 PM by MoodsR4Cattle
The Robins are back, we've had a couple days in the 70's and I've got a bush with a bunch of pretty pink flowers on it. Spring! Woo Hoo!

This year though, my Tulips and Daffodils only produced leaves, no flowers.

My yard is 90% weeds. Sorrel, Henbit, Violets, Moss, and some kind of funky evergreen. Not the most beautiful sight, but it's near impossible to grow grass under the two old Sugar Maples that shade most of the front.

Time for some outside work. Because it was overgrown and covered with honeysuckle vine (1.5" trunk), I cut one of the old Forsythia bushes all the way down to the stumps. The inside was pretty rotted anyway, and if it doesn't come back it will be replaced with a couple Thuja Green Giant trees (they're like Cypress).

In the side/back yard I've got a huge Water Oak. In the back yard I'd love to plant a Dawn Redwood. They were quite scarce for a long time (they grew back with the Dinosaurs) but have made a comeback. My mother planted one in her front yard in 1970 and it's about 60' tall now.

Last year's spring was depressing. We had 2 weeks of very warm weather, weeks before we should have, and all the trees popped their leaves out, and the flowering trees were in full bloom. Then we were hit by 2 weeks of freezing and below and it killed it all. It was at least month before the trees produced more leaves.

I'm babbling.

    nah I dont think so.
I cant wait until spring pops.
soon Tippy (my tortoise) will emerge from his winter nap (I hope)
he dug a nice burrow in his yard under a concrete slab that adjoins the yard and has been there all winter.
the fellow is proobably older than i am. he allways seems to give me this look like "kid..... "
somehow he just knows he is older than me.
anyway, my yard has litttle to offer. my neighbours mulberrry tres are starting to bud, and so far i have only gotten 2 plants to live. one is my oleander bush that i planted last year and the other is our christmas tree that i try to plant every year. this time i think it will live.
oh yeah, i also have a cresote bush that was at the house when i bought it.
I REALLY envy you for having lushness that you dont have to fight to keep alive.
inside my house i have a baby mulberry tree that i found growing under my deck when it had one leaf. it is about 12 inches tall now after 2 years. the cat nibbled off the bud on the top this year and i pray that he did not kill it. some day i will plant it outsidde and hope it dosent die. i hate the desert for not allowing lushness.

    ok now im babbleing.

I will post pics of the tipster when he comes out this year.
pretty low maintenence pet. needs water and i pull leaves off the mulberry tree for food. occasional salad treats. but he has been on his own for so long before i got him that i know that whatever he does, he knows what he is doing.

I'd love to see a pic of Tipster! I had a turtle (not a tortoise) for years. It was one of those little quarter sized turtles that had something painted on it when we bought him. 15 years later (and dozens of unsuspecting goldfish) he'd grown to 5" across.

I don't know what I'd do in a desert situation. I hope your Mulberry comes back!

Yep, spring is here in PA early this year. We had a very mild winter. Only around 6'' of snow total!
I got the raking bug this weekend and raked the whole back of the house and half of the front flower beds. I like to get that done before the spring plants start to poke their heads up through the leaves and make raking almost impossible without decapitating. Not to mention I did some mulching here and there.
And the time change....love that extra daylight!
