Opinions welcome ....

I love my RX7 - I've posted about it many times.

.... However ....

An opportunity to get a 1983 Porsche 944 has come up - at a good price - and I wanted everyone's opinion.
I do know that they need regular maintenance (new timing belt and water pump at about every 45,000 miles) and they basically need a new clutch at about each 55,000. This is all well and good, but each item is very expensive, for example the clutch could reach $1500 - $2000 alone. The Porsche in question is black (I like that) and needs some cleaning but it's such a great body! New super shiny paint. Much of this work (with the exception of the clutch) was done within the last month, or so they claim.

They stress the timing belt the most because the way the engine works in this model is, two pistons work one cylinder (4 cylinder - 8 small pistons unless I completely misunderstood) and if the timing is off, one piston will bang up against another - leading to Major expensive engine work. This was fixed in later models.

Of course, this means I'll have to sell the X.

Am I nuts? Seriously.

Your thoughts?

seriously? give up a wankel driven rocket?
my dad had an x before I was born, said he ran flat out against a jag. neither one could go faster and they eventually just backed off and pulled over and talked.
maybe a 914 absolutely for a 911
those have classic styling. but not for a 944 bubblebutt.
keep the x spend your money on upgrades and whatnot.

Well, that's just the thing ...
I like the 944 bubblebutt (kinda like looking in a mirror).

The X drives as sluggish as my '97 Saturn coup. and is in need of a complete engine overhaul. That in itself is more than I paid for the car - and is more than the 944 costs. (I had a guy in a supped up VW Bug beat me in a street race, how pathetic is that? - Um, just don't tell my husband.)

The X is a rocket ... but around 98 mph it starts to float. It's aerodynamics just don't keep it glued to the road at that speed. You may ask why I'm going 98 mph? Why have a sports car if you don't want to go fast? Why do people own these massive pick-up trucks and never haul anything? Why is it the people with the humongous SUV's drive alone, and people driving a Civic cram as many bodies as possible in? I would love to drive the Autobahn some day.

Some red flags are popping up with this 944 now anyway ...

red flags?
oh and if this makes you feel better (like you probably know already) porche is (was at one time) an offshoot of VW. so, getting swamped by a suped bug as akin to getting swamped by an older porche. (hey, German engineering is German engineering)

Red Flags ... suspicions or possible problems

Who in their right mind would sell a Porsche unless it had problems?

VW and Porsche, kinda. The Porsche was given the new engine design (you know, the banging pistons?) and I'm glad of that at least, who want's a sports car that has that piercing whine of an old VW Bug?

Being an offshoot of VW makes one wonder why the parts are so expensive!

The site won't let me edit my post ... here the info for those red flags:

I found 5 additional ads that this same guy placed - 3 of them have different reasons for selling and they all seem lame. "I'm too tall", "My wife said OK to a Mini Cooper", "Want to trade for a Saturn". The weird thing is that he bought the car from CA, drove it 2500 miles and want's to sell it a week later.

LOL ... Ok, so what you're saying is that:

1. I'm without a doubt, a stupid female that didn't do her homework.
2. I must be blond, to want that bubblebutt. (I'm brunet)
3. I'm nuts to dump my X.
4. ... etc.

Hey ... I said that I had an opportunity for a 1983 Porsche 944 - I haven't even seen the car in person.

There's a sucker born every day. I'm not one of them - I was born a Loooong time ago.

funny, I thought i was nicer than that. I hope thats not how i came across. the sale ad was more of what the seller was thinking.

it wont hurt to have a certified mechanic look at it and give their opinion. also mebbe carfax?

here is what i think.
1) stupid female? doubtfull.
2) dont blondes prefer convertables?
3) I dont even know what you look like.
4) brunette ends with an "e" (sorry had to )
5) everything I say must be followed by a grain of salt.

Exactly! Too weird. I've dropped the idea. I offered my Saturn as an equal trade ( I hate this Saturn ) ... and he initially said that was just what he was looking for ... but apparently it wasn't powerful enough:

I noticed that he listed the car again ... no photos, less description, but now he wants to trade for a "bigger 4 cylinder for daily commute".

That's funny, Stiney. I didn't have the bubblebutt when my husband agreed to marry me. LOL
