It's been ten years since my last eye test. My husband decided after watching me hold small print at arms length (embarrassing at a restaurant) that it was time to go again. Today I'm wearing my new glasses with no-line Bi-Focals. I feel so old. I can't see anything. That's not exactly true, I can see ... but if it's not directly in the center of the lens, it's blurry as hell! Assuming, of course, that hell is blurry. If you don't move your head, but try to look left or right it's all blur AND distortion.

I am thrilled that I can now read small print (or relatively large print for that matter) without wishing for longer arms. But the area for prime print focus is very small as well ... the width of a paperback is about all that will fit in the view in focus.

Can't turn your head too fast either - it gets all swimmy and you feel like you're looking out of a fish bowl. Everyone says I'll get used to it after about a week.

We'll see how I feel about them in a week. :)

Today a really funny thing happend.

I knew that my dog is a bit crazy, and that his brains probably aren't any bigger than a peanut. But today he proved that even that was overestimated.

Today my dog chased the birds in the garden just like any other day. Running around, stopping, hoping they didn't see him (even though he is a 30kilo labrador he still believes he is stealthy). And than in a big cloud of dirt and twigs running towards them, to reach them just too late and see them fly away.

But today was different, today my dog had a new plan. Today my dog proved his insanity! This time he walked around them, trying to sneak past them. They did see him, but they didn't care, they knew he would always lose the chase...But instead of running towards them, he climbed up some stones. At first it looked like he was going to lay in the sun, but that was a distraction. In reality he climbed even higher, and then jumped. Right on top of the pigeons. The pigeons barely escaped, but my dog had found a new way.

Since that first time he has made several attempts that way. And one almost succeeded(new pigeon I think). And I think, no Im afraid. That since today my dog believes he can flie.

Just something I wanted to share with you guys ;)

It was really great, even though it was just 200km away ( that would be 125 miles or so). But as you probably now, down here in the netherlands it is really flat.

And 200km away from where I live there are hills. So that makes a vacation for me :p sunshine and hills!

the seed husks I cold do without, but thats not the point of todays rambling.

We have a pair (at least) of desert dove that unlike most of the others, seem to want to come in our house. they dont fly in, just wander in like a pigeon and look around like they are gonna move in or something.

the other day I heard a noise, looked up and there they were inside again. they had moved on from courting too, and were now doing the bird nasty right there in the doorway.

I dont close the screen because my cat enjoys the freedom of going out into our gated courtyard (thats as far as he would go, he is a serious indoor cat) sometimes, he chases the birds around. being winged, they have a secure advantage over his fat, 20 pound butt. I need not worry for the birds safety.

I think they do it to mock him.
:flybye:

our computer plotter is acting up at work. or, at least i think its the plotter. prints autocad files fine but ask it to print a pdf from reader or acrobat and whoa: things get all stoopid.
it spools the files and then freezes up. have to use taskmanager and close acrobat. then it prints fine.
but the title blocks won't print. (on the small printer they will and it dosent freeze up.)

I think its a bad driver file.

I'm not all that happy with it because I have to get up and down to keep checking it. which ordinairily wouldnt be a big deal.

but this weekend I stepped on a nail. not really that bad actually, I was walking down the steps on my back deck and stepped down onto a nail that had worked its way up out of the wood plank. it didnt really go in, just kinda took a chunk out of the front of my foot near my toes.
you know, that point that you roll your foot on whenever you take a step.

its more bothersome than painfull. just enough to make me walk funny which in turn uses muscles that i dont usually use, so now my calves hurt even though the nail gouge dosent.

my truck drives funny, only on the way home. after i get off the freeway it lurches along like the gas is running out. but if i get on it, it runs fine. and after a few miles or so the problem clears up. go figure.
but i may have fixed that. I think it was the EGR valve vacuum line. thats what it was last time.
its what i get for using fishtank air line and that 1/4 inch garden drip line instead of making the trip to a parts store and buying the right vacuum line for a buck.

I'm gonna blame it on that somebody has a voodoo doll, and is using it.

.... However ....

An opportunity to get a 1983 Porsche 944 has come up - at a good price - and I wanted everyone's opinion.
I do know that they need regular maintenance (new timing belt and water pump at about every 45,000 miles) and they basically need a new clutch at about each 55,000. This is all well and good, but each item is very expensive, for example the clutch could reach $1500 - $2000 alone. The Porsche in question is black (I like that) and needs some cleaning but it's such a great body! New super shiny paint. Much of this work (with the exception of the clutch) was done within the last month, or so they claim.

They stress the timing belt the most because the way the engine works in this model is, two pistons work one cylinder (4 cylinder - 8 small pistons unless I completely misunderstood) and if the timing is off, one piston will bang up against another - leading to Major expensive engine work. This was fixed in later models.

Of course, this means I'll have to sell the X.

Am I nuts? Seriously.

Your thoughts?

The gate was left open. It took all of 10 seconds for my hounds to notice and bolt. Instead of going to the left, which is the way we go when we take walks (on a leash) they went right, which takes them to a very busy 4 lane. Greyhounds don't know about cars and traffic - they know running.

As they made their way down the street they ignored the frantically barking dogs. I guess freedom was more important than olfactory satisfaction. My husband went after them on foot. I jumped in the van. The neighbors at the end of the street must have thought I was a stalker ... going slow up and down the street. I couldn't find the dogs or my husband. I drove out on the 4 lane and went about 50 yards, turned around and started back ... there they were, only 15 feet from the road. I pulled over without even considering the traffic. I was afraid they would run if they saw me, some dogs do that, but fortunately they came when I called.

When we got home my son asked if I disciplined the dogs. I explained that dogs think differently - that if I had disciplined them, they would connect my calling with something unpleasant and would learn to never come when they were called. Instead I praised them for coming. He seemed to catch the idea.

The first greyhound I had in the late 90's, (D.D. was her track name - I'm pretty sure it stood for Dumb Dog) also found the gate was left open. We didn't notice she was gone until after we had gathered scraps from our Thanksgiving dinner to give to her. I drove around for 2 hours and some people had seen her, but it was getting dark and D.D. was black. I finally came upon an apartment complex where she was sniffing around, but it was on the other side of a 2 lane. I saw headlights approaching and didn't want to call D.D. because I knew she'd come running. She saw me and came anyway. I ran into the road to pull her to the side because she'd stopped to do her happy dance, but she saw the headlights and froze like a deer. I couldn't budge her (she was 80 pounds, and stubborn as a mule) so I stood in front of her frantically waving my arms at the Pick-up truck. I was under a street light so I thought they would see me, but at the last second I was forced to step back on the center double line and the truck smacked D.D. throwing her 20 feet into the grass. That damn truck didn't even stop - he didn't even slow down! After the moron in the truck was passed, I stood in the middle of the road quite sure that D.D. was dead. I stood for what felt like eternity staring at the place she landed. There was movement, and she hobbled out of the grass and stumbled back to the apartments where I caught her.

The vet was astounded that she was alive, let alone unbroken. Not one rib. She was sore, but recovered fine.

It was an old flat front pick-up. That's what saved her. It hit her broadside and knocked her out of the way.

I'm quite certain that Baker & Bogie wouldn't have been so lucky had they made their way out on the 4 lane.

Phew.

I love King Crimson. Just thought I'd mention that.

They just finished rehearsing here in N'ville (Fripp stays at Belew's house which is just down the road. And yes, we watched the local Starbucks to see if we could catch Fripp there - like a good stalker would - but no we didn't see him this time.).

The complete BUMMER is that the tickets for the 3 pre-shows (here in N'ville) sold out before I could get mine. DAMN! CRAP! And other various colorful language that I can't say here (but trust me, I've vocalized them plenty).

I'll just have to sit outside the venue.
All by myself.
I'm sure it will be loud enough.

Sh*t!

Well i'm not much for writing anything down so i'm thinking what is logging all my readings when taking a photograph all about because we all know the situation will always be different for each individual shot .. Even in digital photography you just never get the same set of hypo situations right..So its a hit and miss situation.. well for Wet photography it is anyway.. actaully its a pain in the aztec when you have to go back and reshoot cause what you thought you got was so off base in the first go around. Besides who wants to sit there and write down Apture and Shutter speed what time of day it was and so on and so forth.. Well, to be honest I just plain forget to do the tedious things because i just wanna shoot shoot shoot... So, yeah there really is good reason to record each shot but am i gonna actually do it .. Well NO.. Duhhhh
and for the very reasons already mentioned. Besides did you ever hear of Ansel Adams keeping a log?.. .. Good question.. huh Well i'm not gonna make this more work than it really should be .. face it.. with old and new school photography we all shoot hundrest of photos in a session or even more.... I do have to say though with Old School my limit is when i run out of roll film.. which could be between 1 and 10 rolls.... I do my own developing which is totally not goof proof ...Nor dose it help when other class mates bend the reels which makes it more difficult to put the film on them while in the dark. Mmmmm I guess i have a lot of pet peeves where the dark room and devoloping rooms are concerned because I usually set up and break down before and after class. Though it seem to me that the rest of these people taking the same class as me would want to learn how to run a wetlab as well....Unfortunatly that cuts down on print time so i usually get like one or two at the most in ,.. mmm .. unless i press the clock and do what i want anyway.. bedamned the instructor.... Its a wonder he puts up with me..
LOL....

Well, the question was

Logging Vs. Blogging.. Seems to me the Blogging won this round.. HAHAHA

Okay, I'm Shutting Up...

Hey now, don't be expecting to much of this typing stuff from me i'm more of a mouse person... LOL..

moods' post inspired me to write this rather that hijack her blog with all my ramblings.

I just finished with my pc spring cleaning ritual of blowing out the whole thing with compressed air (cringe if you must but im talking about high volume air, not that crap in a can! the air compressor in my garage has a moisture filter so I dont have to worry about spritzing condensation all over my board) gently blowing off everything inside and making sure to really spend some quality time on the power supply box (thats the only place that i really let the air blast hard) its amazing how much stuff gets in there. while I was at it this year, I replaced my video card with a newer looking one that was passed on to me but never installed. "truck dismount" now runs a bit faster (google it. I found about it here at biorust because it was mentioned in the Quick Flames tutorial. the game is small, addictive, and simple.)
my screen saver runs a bit faster and smoother.
I also took the time to make sure that it didnt need to be defragged yet, and to clean up my un-needed files.
Now, I believe that most people here at biorust understand the importance of regular file mantainence, but after working at wallymart for a number of years its astounding how many people buy a pc and then do nothing to keep it running. Many people would complain "I just bought this computer a year ago and its running sooooo slow, I think I have a virus." the conversations usually went like this:

"do you have an anti virus program?" the answer was almost always yes, and that they update often (only because the virus program prompts them to)
"well that rules out most viruses. when was the last time you defragmented your hard drive?" at this point, I usually got a blank stare, a few blinks, and a "what's that?"

one person I talked to hadn't defragged in over 3 years!! and she wondered why when you click on the start menu it slooowly rose off the bottom of the screen, and that it would take 5 minutes to load a program like ie6. the only thing she knew was that it seemed to be slowly getting worse.

I actually watched my neighbor touch, no, rub (with his bare hand) his board and video card. WHEN THE THING WAS RUNNING!

Over the past several months my Mac (iMac G5) has been acting up. Programs began to crash and load / close very slowly, opening or saving a large file could take up to 3 minutes, the fan would be working overtime, the external firewire drive would drag (and I do mean drag). As time went on, my keyboard wouldn't be recognized on boot-up and I'd have to unplug/plug it back in every time (I blamed the Microsh*t keyboard). Then last Friday the damn thing booted all the way to the desktop then it faded out. Tried booting again and it didn't even get to the desktop, last try and the light came on and went off again. Dead in the water. I attributed this to many things, one being that my Mac was a dog - and took out my frustration on my mouse. Poor mouse.

This was a very slow process - took two years to completely die. My husband opened the back and found some interesting things. Five to be exact. Five bloated capacitors. Turns out that this is not strictly a Mac problem, but everyones problem:

Capacitor Plague

Apparently my computer took longer to bloat than usual. Mac extended the warranty from one year to three to handle this problem, however, when we took my dead Mac to the Mac Store they said it was five months out of that three year warranty. But not to worry, they were going to fix it for free anyway. No Kidding! They replaced the entire motherboard, power supply and the DVD drive - and it was ready the next day (Saturday). Does Mac freaking rock or what?

I bought this computer used two years ago, and it seemed fine, a little slower than I'd hoped, but faster than my G3. Now my computer runs with speed that I didn't know it had and it's quiet. I'm happy and my mouse is happy.

So, if your computer (or other electronics) is acting up, check the capacitors!
