Blender error

Just got Blender a month ago in order to sneak peek at my upcoming Maya class. I've managed to create some okay models, for a first and second try, but I have hit a snag. When I tried to continue the wyvern head (adding a neck and body), Blender refused to give me an insertion point, even when I click the screen. Now I can't create new objects from scratch, although I can duplicate them. The problem persists even when I quit the program and reopen the file. Does anyone know why this might happen?
