biorust stock photos?

I read a post when i joined biorust by user 4sundance and it seems to have generated some intrest. mostly around copyright infringement and all.

my question is this:
do you think biorust should have its own stock photo library for users only?

it could be a way for us to spend our biocredits.

I just figured that since we host to so many photographers and artists that we may have the power to create our own to share.

any thoughts or input would also be appreciated.

I think it would be a good idea, but we need to invent some way to keep the quality high and avoid the 'holiday snaps' plague. Maybe we can put them down as a download and upgrade the system with proper previews, etc?

Mmmm... Somesort of version of this idea would be awesome. I think I got it: You can upload your images and you will need to fill out a form for it (description and etc) and then it goes up without any moderation. Though it would be nice to have a mod or two keep an eye out and check there randomly. It takes x amount of biocreds to download the full resolution photo. And the uploader of the picture will receive x biocreds when someone downloads the photo. How would that sound? Too much coding?

perhaps a members only gallery with some basic catagoties (vehicles, people, stuff)
as the submitter to nameit simply what it is (ie. Toaster) that way a search could be done or the files could be listed alphabetacally (click for free preview and upload options)

Generally, i think it's a good idea, but i do have concerns...

As a photographer myself, i am not interested in granting free reign over my work to someone else... I of course choose not to contribute to 'stock photography' sites but my concerns are that if BioRUST implements such a program, that:

1. People will mistakenly assume that all imagery on BioRUST is Public Domain
2. The submission of work will become far less 'artistic' oriented.. meaning the purpose for sharing work would be less about constructive feedback.
3. What legality issues surround such an endeavor... ie: who is liable if someone submits a copyrighted photo that is not their own, or uses a model who has not given a release?

I understand the 'using credits to buy photos' part but what motivation is there to photographers to give away the rights to their work?

Just some concerns....

If anything, i would suggest that the submissions NOT include people.

Mike.

for yout first concern: That's why I sign all my gallery submissions. The signature is near impossible to find for a random come-by, but if I need to, I can prove that it is my image.

Proving the image is yours is of no consequence once the damage is done...

Even with the watermarking technology available today, theres no real way to protect your work...

My concern is not that someone will intentionally use protected works for their own projects... there is no way to prevent that once you post on the web... my concern is for people who THINK they have permission to use images in the gallery because somebody told them biorust.com is a great place to get stock photos.

Besides that, E&O insurances rates are skyrocketing because of Copyright Infringement cases... the recent controversy with Flickr is not helping ease my concerns...

Mike.

We could start adding large watermark like 'NOT FOR FREE USE!' or something... Although it wouldn't be so good to look at.

what about opening a group account at photobucket or some similar photo storage site?
standing members with a good rep could purchace (again with biocredits) an access password that could be changed monthly. that way our stock photos would not be avaliable at biorust and worries about biorust would being a place for stock photos would be eliminated.
also the stock lib could be by admin invite only or by requesting it from an admin via private message. man1c and other anmins know the regular users and can seperate the real users from "noobs" out for some free pics. allthough this could place a heavier burdon on our allready hard working admins.

also people could be ruled out as far as stock subjects. I think there are people out there somwehre that we could photograph ourselves. from our friends, family etc. so there is no real need for that.

Sounds like a great idea to me, I always struggle to find decent stock photos without having to fork out hard earned cash!

I also dabble in photography a little and would be happy to contribute my photos if they are deemed good enough!!
