The only thing you need to know about avatars is (on this site, at least) the maximum size is 100 by 100 pixels or 24.4 KB (whichever is smaller), and they can be JPG, GIF or PNG. The rest is up to you.

Being niave about signatures and avatars, what is the difference?
Just made my first signature. Never thought to do one until last night I thought I would give it a go. Well it might give me a little street cred?

Thanks for the links

An avatar is the little image that shows up next to your username. This is the derivation of the word, copied from Wikipedia:
Quote:
The "avatar" derives from the Sanskrit word Avatāra, meaning "incarnation" and usually implying a deliberate descent into mortal realms for special purposes. The term is used primarily in Hindu texts. For example, Krishna is the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Vishnu the Preserver, whom many Hindus worship as God. The Dasavatara are ten particular "great" incarnations of Vishnu.
A signature is the image or text (or both) that appears below each post you make in the forums.

I didn't put the two together as I know about Avatāra.
