ah, makes sense. But if I installed it as a second operating system it wouldn't affect the first, correct?

Well, you have to partition the drive which can damage your OS now. Best thing to do is to reformat the drive into two drives and reinstall your windows and the linux distro of your choice.

hmm, yes I remember the partition thing. I had to do that once for something, though I didn't know that it could damage a current OS :P....hmm. Unfortunately because of the restrictions they have on the computers and the long process it would take for it to reinstall windows and then all of the other stuff that is needed I really cant uninstall and reinstall windows. I guess it will just be something to do in the future. Though I do have an external hard drive...perhaps if I set it on recovery mode...

Also, if she bought it from a "shop," they probably only bought one copy of Windows and installed it on many machines to save money. I read somewhere that if this is the case and you can prove that they included a non-genuine version of Windows with your machine that Microsoft will give you a legit copy for turning them in.

But the problem is that there stands: Windows XP Professional and i don't got professional but Home edition =S

That's why I don't think it's a bona fide error message. Any chance of a screenshot of the error message?

press the [prt sc] key. On a desktop keyboard it is in the middle block of keys. On a laptop you have to usually press the fn key and look at the top right block of keys. Then open up an imaging program and select paste or press Ctrl + V

And if nothing is working try to double click the logo in the right part of the start bar.....then you should enter the code that's on the official sticker that's on your pc(mostly at the back) from microsoft......

Hope it helps!!

I had the same problem, that was because I had to "reset" my pc after an hardware failure Then I downloaded the newest update of windows(wich has an piratery check) after i entered the code the message disapeard. And I wasn't the only one having that problem. The microsoft site thing had an message about it a while ago

I already clicked on it and on some page i have to type in the code and check what color it it, etc and they said everything was correct

Well, it certainly looks like a genuine Microsoft message. Have you tried contacting Microsoft directly? Have a look at Microsoft Help and Support

Another dutch person
Well about the message I had excactly the same thing, and it looks like the official one indeed.

Just try to enter the code somewhere.......(like go to "legitieme software" and maybe you can enter it there. The code can be found at the back of you PC)

Well hope it helps, and if it doesn't work contact the microsoft helpdesk...

It doesn't look right to me i don't know german so I may be wrong, but on the screen they spelled the word maybe as maby if thats not the spelling in german then it's a fake message, unless this is just your spelling mistake,I would contact microsoft and explain your situation give them the name of the shop you bought it from and see what they say they will probably give you a proper copy of windows.

I don't know German either, but the language in that screenshot is Dutch. The English bits are Lauranne's translation.

It's not pointless at all! I'd be happy if I could speak at least one other language - I take my hat off to you!
