Also, if she bought it from a "shop," they probably only bought one copy of Windows and installed it on many machines to save money. I read somewhere that if this is the case and you can prove that they included a non-genuine version of Windows with your machine that Microsoft will give you a legit copy for turning them in.
hahaha (that was for the last paragraph) I go to college, my work study is at tech services

I don't know if it is said before, but if "windows" sais such things you can track down the message. I don't realy know how but it is possible. And I would recommend adaware i've been using it for a couple of years and my PC still works!!

And if nothing is working try to double click the logo in the right part of the start bar.....then you should enter the code that's on the official sticker that's on your pc(mostly at the back) from microsoft......

Hope it helps!!

I had the same problem, that was because I had to "reset" my pc after an hardware failure Then I downloaded the newest update of windows(wich has an piratery check) after i entered the code the message disapeard. And I wasn't the only one having that problem. The microsoft site thing had an message about it a while ago

Microsoft just feeds Microsoft haters with all their bugs and holes and issues. I honestly wish there were more than a couple of equatable operating systems to compete with Windows. I don't like the mac OS because I don't like the controls or layout (plus certain issues with games). But the problems Lauranne describe are things that Microsoft has been dealing with forever, it's like they jump too far ahead for their own good. They get so excited about getting some thing to work that it almost seems like they just forget to make sure it isn't severely faulty.

MS continue to alienate people with things like WGA and their "you-are-a-thief-until-you-prove-otherwise" attitude. Have you considered Linux - or Ubuntu?

I haven't heard of Ubuntu but I have considered Linux. Unfortunately, as a college kid I have to stick with windows for compatibility reasons at the moment. Though I do have some hope vested in Vista. Honestly, Microsoft has alot of potential with great programs, they just seem to rush them, fall through on support, and do little tiny things that bug and annoy people. Such as the mentioned thief issue, or the annoying "Microsoft knows best..." seeming attitude. I don't mean to go on a tirade against them, but it gets frustrating at times.

Heh heh - don't worry, mate - you're not on your own!

As for Ubuntu: I haven't tried it myself, but here's a link: Welcome - Ubuntu: Linux for human beings

I took a tour of the Microsoft visitor center this past summer. They had a couple of computers running Vista. To be quite honest, I was not impressed. They are going to the flashy, "pretty" Mac look and I hate it. That's just my opinion of course.

As for linux, I've used Ubuntu and I don't see what's so special about it. I'd much rather use Fedora or Slackware. But then again that's just me.

What kind of compatibility issues do you have that you would need windows for?

to be able to keep it running on the network. I could switch to a mac and be safe, but I don't like macs. Anything other a mac probably wont get any support. And anything other than windows pretty much gets nil support anyways. So if my computer goes haywire, I'm screwed. Which is why I'm sticking to windows.

It's kinda sad because I'm a techie kind of person, but I forget, isn't there a way to have dual OS on your computer
and you just choose one at boot-up?

Gotcha. Mac OS is a unix based operating system so if it can be done on a mac, it's possible on a linux operating system as well. Only the Linux based is probably more difficult to use than it needs to be.

I understand the support problems. I'm one of the few people at my work that can troubleshoot Windows and Unix based OS's (Mac, Linux).

they have a tech guy that likes Linux, but I think they would flat out refuse me if I decided to change. But the dual operating systems is an option...

Haha. I don't think they would refuse you

Yea, definately check out a couple of different distrobution Live CDs before you decide on the one to dual boot though. No point in wasting time installing a distro you're not gonna use.

Well, that way you can try the distro's for a couple of hours or however long without installing or affecting your current operating system. Might help you figure out which you want to install, if you decide to install one at all.
