Biorust v3
Well, i'm gonna be busy for the next 10 days sorting out my diploma coursework before the inevitable deadline (which is 6th Nov), but after that I was thinking of beginning on the Biorust v3 project. Here's what I have decided to do so far: - Create a brand-new interface (obviously). Unlike the previous versions, though, the new Biorust will be vivid and more 'trend whore'. I was actually thinking that the main design could follow the theme of a spaceship (much like the mothership in Homeworld 2), with a background consisting of an abstract starscape rendered in Bryce. I'll still resist going down the Flash MX route, though, as i'm not experienced in that type of interface... yet...

- The shoutbox on the right will be joined by a box that lists the most recent forums postings. This should drive more of the regular 2.5k daily visitors into the forums.
- The affiliates box will vanish and be integrated into the main design. It was a nice idea in Biorust v2, but used up tons of space that will now be used by the forums box.
- I'll add a downloads section to the site, which will feature freely downloadable style files, pixel fonts, etc. Generally just stuff that people find useful, and that I can obtain permission to share.
- Adverts! LOL! Soz, i'm just teasing - I have NO plans to install ads on any of my websites.

- As soon as Vbulletin v3 reaches its production release, I intend to upgrade, and enable journals for all members. Blogging seems to be a massive craze these days, so why not jump on the bandwagon?
- In the longer term, I also intend to integrate all site commenting functions into Vbulletin, although this will undoubtedly require some nifty recoding. Something to quietly work on in the background I think...
Anyway, these are my thoughts so far. All comments and suggestions are, of course, very much welcome...

All that sounds awsome.. I personally cannot wait.. I think the forum integration will drive more people to the forums.
Also, I am intrigued by the interface design you have.. sounds interesting... and to be honest.. I have nothing to add to that wonderful wish.. even though it is huge non the less... a lot of work there..

It's gonna be awesome! I cant wait! Youve really got some great ideas there, and the forum box WILL get more people into the forums. ! And the more people posting in the forums, the better of site it is

Well, we sure got lots of room to expand! The forums are mostly text-based, so use very little bandwidth. I could realistically support 1 million visitors and the server would still stay perfectly stable. I dunno about Vbulletin though...

Well, I was refering to bandwidth - I think the CPU would conk out with 1 million simultaneous visitors, and the memory would most certainly grind to a halt. Over a month, though, 1 million visitors wouldn't harm it much. I used to run GibWorld.com off a Pentium 2 300mhz, with 256mb ram, and it coped with 2 million per month very nicely...
PS. The specs are 1x Intel Celeron 1.7ghz, 512mb DDR Ram, 80gb HD, and a 100mbit connection to the net.

Well, if this site ever gets THAT popular, a load balancing arrangement would definately be on the cards...

Worst comes to worse, go back to vB 2.3.0 until vB releases a more stable 3.x version.

I have an idea that vBulletin 3.x will be stable.. in php, you can beta, but it is usually just as stable if not more so.. the only way php bogs down is when the code is not optimized to run for a lot of users..

So m0g, your going to test the beta on this board? Ugh. I'm kind of weary on that idea.
I suggestion you wait until after they're finished beta testing.

Lol - nope! As I said, i'm gonna wait until the production release. After all, I don't want to spend ages implementing a board that might be incompatible with the non-beta versions!
Plus, of course, i'm a bit snobby with code versions. I never run betas - I prize my stability too much...
