Unpleasant Comments Policy

Hiya guys! I was wondering what you all think I should do about unpleasant comments in the main site shoutbox? Of course, i'm very willing to respond to all comments of plaigiarism, and no-one has ever produced any credible evidence to the contrary. The profile of these flamers is always the same - they post anonymously, with no way of getting back to them, and they don't post any evidence. I'm very tempted to hit the delete button, but in the back of my mind that might make me look guilty. What do you guys think?

PS. This isn't in response to any event in particular - its just something thats been bugging me for a while...

Man and I thought I was the only problem.

To be honest, people in the world are jerks. They're stupid, rude, ignorant and don't realize how hard you work on your site.

Carbondesigns.tk spammed the out of my shoutbox. I saved the posts and posted a new article talking about it.

He has stopped now that he realized he was making a HUGE fool out of himself.

I guess the best thing is to delete them. Don't feel bad. I have to delete the occasional shout out on my shoutbox. It's a part of being a webmaster.

I'm almost positive there isn't a simple shoutbox out there that doesn't contain either: spam (advertising someone's site), profanity, or some rude nasty comment.

Just like it go. Delete the posts and move on. Not much you can do. If you post an article on it on the main page people will be motivated to do it even more. I've seen it.

It's okay Mog, don't worry.

If its swearing, or spamming, just go ahead and delete it, chances are noone will care (except the person who posted it).

I'm kinda afraid when I (eventually) open my site about spamming, but I guess if you just block/delete people who post bad stuff, it will slow down.

Evdawg: Spamming is easy to delete.. but not a solution.. depends on your view on forums..

A lot of people have policies that say that no post will be removed, and only users who spam a very large amount... and some forums delete posts often.. it depends on the Admin...

My general rule to follow is - "If it offends you then chances are it's likely to offend other people, therefore it should go - if it's just someone being lame leave it on there for other people to laugh at just how lame some people are"

Hmmmm. Well, thanks for your opinion guys. I think i'll be a little tougher in my shoutbox in future. I never mind valid points, but the troublemakers will find their posts eradicated... MUHAHAH!

m0g, can you ip ban posters? Easily fix right?

Or.... make it so the name 'anonymous' or 'guest' can't be used. Have it as a blocked name.

ip banning would not be hard.. however most users on dialup would be able to bypass it.. since dialup uses dynamic ip addresses.

and of course someone who abuses the shoutbox would not post it in their name anyhow.. if it were me, I would let them say what they have to say.. m0g seems to have a good group that protect the shoutbox.. so to be honest i dont see the issue with it..??

Yeah I agree.

The shoutbox isn't really a huge problem. I think it's fine.

Well, as promised, i'll implement mods the moment we get more than 500 posts. The way this forum is expanding, this will probably be in the middle of next week....

Yeah this forum will most definately need moderators in the near future.

I've been with many forums before and I haven't ever seen one expand as quick as this. Many forums take at least a month to reach 500 posts. I'm proud of you m0g.
