New Server Hardware Needed!
Biorust's server hardware is a little old and having trouble dealing with all the page requests & downloads that we have grown to serve. Two options exist - we can upgrade the hosted server package via our existing host *OR* we can buy a new server and co-locate it. The second option offers greatly improved connectivity and reduced maintenance costs, but 1U server boxes also suffer the problem of being hideously expensive. If you can help, please offer us a little donation. Even $1 helps! We'll need close to $2000 to reach our dream of a blisteringly fast BioRUST!
To donate, click here - its a paypal form, so you know it'll work just fine...

Emptied my Paypal account toward the cause. Only $4.78 but every bit counts, right?

Pockets emptied as well. I just love this place, the people are never rude. Well almost never anyway.

Thanks for the donations guys! $40 of the way in.... now only $1960 to go! LOL! I wish 1U hardware wasn't so ludicrously expensive!

Hey, 5 bucks US isn't much, isn't that about 8 or 9 bucks UK? I've gotten a lot more than that from this site. Hope you get enough to upgrade.
Peace

Umm... Way to go, Mike. Where I come from 50$ is already considered a small fortune, so I probably wont be the one to beat that. Heck I can't even put in 5$ at my current financial stance.

Thanks for the donations peeps! Alas it doesn't look likely that we'll rack up the $2k needed for a truly uber server, but I reckon I can make a nice one for $1100. That will include: 1u Server case, 400W PSU, 2gb ram, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz CPU, WD Raptor SATA 150GB 16MB 10000RPM HDD, & ASRock 4Core1333-FullHD RS600 motherboard. Its skimping a bit on the HDD I know... but its the best SATA one out there. Sound a nice setup?

Sounds swanky!
But for reliability sake do you think it's wise to use the most affordable of 10K drives?
For the same dough you could triple/quadruple your storage with a decent 7200RPM drive with a bit more confidence in it's reliability...
Just my 2cents.. Kudos on the processor! I just bought a new box for myself with the same chip!
Mike.

Good point, but the raptor is a very quick drive (as fast as many RAID setups by itself), and almost a match for SAS. There's no need for high capacity with Biorust, as we really only punch the 10gb mark. TBH the decision is between a 7200rpm RAID0 array and the raptor for speed... and I've never really trusted RAID0 in an enterprise setting...

Wow... only 10GB I would have expected it to be considerable more taxing than that, but if that's the case, I can see your point...
Would RAID1 not be a better way to go then considering the low demand for capacity? RAID1 (mirroring) would give BioRUST faster read times providing multi-threading was enabled... and still support fault recovery...
Mike.

Very good point actually, I forgot that RAID1 can multi-thread! I'll get two WD RE2's then - they are supposed to be fast and optimized specifically for RAID1, whilst also being pretty cheap.
NB. In other news, someone special to me just donated £300 (UK Sterling) towards the server as an advance birthday prezzie. W00t! Over half way there now with the cost of the server...

I just sent in 10$, how about setting up something where people could donate $5 per month on a subscription? I use this on one of my sites, and it is fairly popular.
