Resolution Change

To fit ever more information into BioRUST's bulging interface, I am seriously considering altering the site to fit browsers 1024*768px and higher (the previous config was suited for browsers 800*600px and upwards).

What do you guys think about this? Most of the larger CG-orientated websites have already taken this step, and the extra pixels in terms of width might benefit my designs greatly.... but only if it doesn't alienate a large chunk of our audience whom are still using 800*600 resolutions.

Before you decide, take a look at the main site in your browser, and then the forums/wiki. The latter have been temporarily expanded to give you some idea of the width of design I am hoping to achieve.

Gawd, glad I seen this post, Man1c. Was just about to start a new thread asking about the expanded pages. =]

I'm all for it, just have to get used to the view. Although you could always implement an option for this that each of us can utilize depending on our browsing habits.

I think that would work right nicely, having an option always at hand.

Oh yeah - definitely! 100%
The current 800x600 format looks so cramped on my monitor. I'm currently using a screen res of 1280x1024, and I know most serious computer-based artists and designers operate at at least this resolution, if not higher. So, yeah - go for it!

I'm all for it...

I think any visitor to BioRUST will be equipped to handle 1024x768 (probably higher) by default... Any one even semi-seriously using photoshop or any of the other graphic programs discussed on BioRUST are the most likely candidates to have higher screen resolutions...

80% of users have a display size greater than or equal to 1024x768 (source:Browser Display Statistics)

800x600 accounts for only 14% of ALL web users, a majority of which would be casual visitors outside of BioRUST's target audience...

I for 1 would be very pleased to see a 1024x768 display!

Mike.

I didn't even notice the forums were wider. After looking back at the main page, I see a huge positive change. I definately think the larger resolution is much better.

Yeah, I'm definitely used to the view by now and really like the wider pages compared to the smaller ones. Didn't take me long to adjust, either.

After reading what Mike had stated about %14 of all web users, and getting used to this look, I retract my suggestion for an added option to revert back to a smaller resolution based on browsing habits.

Now, if we could only get a taco stand and a water bubbler in here...

yeah i am (like tamlin) 100% agreed with it,
i have screen resolution of 1400*1050,
and it does look cramped.

also about the extra space u mentioned,
can u give any preview or info 'bout what u wanna add?

grtzZz

(Edit: i will resize my sig later, cuz the scanlines looks ugly when u just edit the size.)

I use a 1680x1050. It all fits nicely for me. But changing from the standard 800 res. sounds like a great idea.

Given the basis for the audience I'd agree that there's going to be a much smaller percentage of people who still use a 800x600 resolution. Going larger won't effect me at all... (especially since my wife has her own laptop to keep at a lower resolution).

That seems to be the thing to do; however if you make it larger, you will add more content... More content=clutter!!! Divy the pages.. use more drop down boxes, specific categories, little less advertising!

I actually think the website is pretty well organized and the advertising is unobtrusive. The site has to bring in enough advertising money to sustain itself, so I commend m0g for finding a way to do that without going overboard.

yep, think this is an great idea indeed.....it looks a bit messy to me know(way to wide)!!

And about the ads, maybe some ads is just a good thing for biorust.....but not to much that would ruin the site....
