FREE - QuarkXPress - Full Legal Version
For those of you that take print design seriously and don't have just under a grand spare, but need a full legal copy of the leading industry standard DTP prog - read on!
Computer Shopper have the rights to distribute a promo full version of QuarkXPress 5, that also includes the following version upgrade. This can be found on the latest issue CD or DVD. It also has discount for those who would like to upgrade to the latest version.
If any of you are interested in any form of print, or want/have a design job - this program is a must have and it's free!
It is very rare that a full design program becomes available on such a promotion, so if you guys don't have this prog, grab the latest copy of Computer Shopper (UK) now!

what does it do? I haven't heard of it before...but then again I'm relatively new to design.

It's the leading desktop publishing prog. Only Adobe InDesign really comes close to competing with QuarkXPress.
If you're looking to get into design, either through college/uni, or into design freelance/studio, it's certainly a prog to pick up when you can get it for free. Other than Photoshop and Illustrator skills and experience, designers who are looking to go into print will need to know how to use QuarkXPress and InDesign, as those two are the main programs designers and printers use for finalising work and getting everything prepared for print.
You can create anything from business cards, posters, to packaging, brochures and magazines with it.

It's not a trial, it's a free full product on the CD.
Edit - Kinda like getting a free version of Photoshop 7.0 on a covermount disc.

ah, is it one of those things where you have to sign up for ads though? I've never known any such thing to be truly "free"

Nah it's a full product of an older version to promote the launch of the latest one. When QuarkXPress 5 came out it was worth just under £1,000 and a lot of design companies and printers still use this version.
It's limited to the covermount CD and DVD of Computer Shopper.
The only minor issue with the software is that you have to register it before the New Year. That's why it's a limited full product promotion.
I can't really make it any more clearer mate lol

No probs. I was quite shocked when I seen it, and I almost missed out on it. If anyone else can benefit from this, rush out and get the latest mag today before they sell out.

wtf you smoking man, it's FREE. lol
You buy the magazine, install it, update it, then you have to register the software before New Year in order to use it. Registering software costs nothing....installing it costs nothing, the full program is FREE!

Great head's up on that Jimbo... I've used Quark, InDesign and Pagemaker (shudder) extensively.
Quark was by far the best desktop publishing program on the market. I personally like CS1 version of InDesign much better than Quark 5, but I'd agree if you're looking for a job in any print media you'll need to familiarize yourself with Quark or InDesign or both. I think Quark is scrabling to try to stop the bleeding with this promotion. Adobe InDesign is quickly becoming as prevolent as Quark. Just about every magazine, catalog, flyer etc. are built with one of these programs.
Pretty much it's an easy way to collect all of your images, logos and text and lay the items out in a format that can be easily manipulated, exported or printed.
The other thing any aspiring print designer should get a handle on is Adobe Acrobat (not just reader). I create PDFs of just about everything I output to send to printers. It's the best way to ensure no problems with images, type or layout.
