$100 Laptop

No joke, a $100.00 laptop! It has a 1GB memory, 500MHz processor, 1megapixel display, wi-fi support and comes with a hand crank. Yes, I said a hand crank. When you want to use the thing you crank it up! But guess what, we can't get one, it is part of a program called One Laptop per Child which plans to distribute the computers to school children in underdeveloped nations.

LOL! This is a great thread, so i'll pop it in the main site news. As good as the laptop sounds, though, you'd have no broadband to connect it to... which is just torture! :/

I actually heard about this on the news not too long ago -- didn't know they came up with a finished design. Pretty cool looking and the hand crank rocks!

That is a very nice idea, but is 100$ not a bit to much money. I mean, young children who are poor won't buy one, and if they are older and interested in computers, they won't buy this one.

The aim for this project isn't that children have to buy them themselves, but that the government buys it for them. I think the creators of this project live in a bit idealistic world. Governments of 3rd world countries are often (NOT ALWAYS!!) corrupt, so why would they care about some kids roaming around without a laptop, or even proper education, in 'their' country?
