Two New Firsts For BioRust!

Hurrah, my new PC is finally all built and working like a charm! I can't say it was very easy, though, as even when I had all the right components, WinXP decided it didn't like things and took to crashing. It took over a week to sort out before I narrowed it down to a faulty driver! I still don't have SLi working at 100% reliability, but at least my machine doesn't crash anymore, even when overclocked by 15%... which ain't bad really!

Anyway, you'll all be glad to know that a working PC means that I have several new tutorials ready for you all! Opening up the new Adobe Illustrator tutorials section, TVPR has written an Introduction to Illustrator. Covering the basics of the pen tool and other Illustrator goodies, this is an excellent way to get started in Adobe's complex vector-illustration program. Not wanting to be outdone, Scrowler has also stepped forward with the first ASP coding tutorial on making A Simple Quiz Script. I can't say that I understand ASP at all, but this walkthrough helps quite a lot! Oh, and finally, Bana has translated the Inset Lines tutorial Photoshop tutorial into French. PHEW - it was quite heavy-going uploading that many tutorials to Biorust... so I'm gonna sit down and have a rest now. Catch you all later!

PS. If you are in the mood for a bit of photography or photo-manipulation, check out this thread (March Photo/Photo Manipulation Assignment.) in the forums for cool competitions on the very same thing! Be careful though... I may enter the latter one myself... ;-)

Congrats on the new computer. I look forward to trying out the new tutorials, especially the illustrator one....been dying to sink my teeth into learning more, so thanks TVPR for giving me a place to start. ASP is beyond where I am at, but after taking a look at the tutorial, I think it is something I might be interested in learning. Scowler thanks for turning me onto something new.

M0g I look forward to seeing you photo manip! Hint. Hint. Hope you have time to play around with it.

Lexi

hey everone......im jake and im new, im not sure how to navigate around the forum poperly yet, so im replying to a random thread! im 16, and i saw my dad using photoshop and got interested.......been playing around on it using tuts and stuff from various sites (obviously biorust's are the best though ). Im not really a whiz on computers or anything like that, but ive really enjoyed trying out stuff on photoshop, and thought i might join here in case i have any queries......talking of which, does anybody know how you can crop out areas of a something i've made which has different layers, without merging my layers? if i merge the layers, then all of the blending options are put over the whole thing, which often ruins my pictures? sorry for the rambling, i tend to do it a lot grrrrr, ill try to get more concise, and plus i'm probably in the complete wrong area of the forum to write this...oh well

I agree with Bub - 'Copy Merged' is the best option for a snapshot or, if you want to destructively edit something, save a new copy and crop it that way (so if anything goes wrong, you can just go back).

PS. If you want to maintain layer effect ratios, dont forget to scale them in proportion to the decreased size of the image. I'm pretty sure I have a tutorial on this somewhere... If not, let me know and i'll make one this friday...

i flatten the image (or merge layers for transparency), then copy, then undo the flattening in the actions window
