How do you make good repeating-image patterns?

When making a background pattern for a webpage, it would be nice if you could move an object past the top of the image and have that top appear at the bottom, Pac-Man-physics-style. That would help a lot. I thought Photoshop's Pattern Maker would let me do this. It doesn't.

I remember being able to do this on a Mac in the school computer lab in 1995. Why can't Photoshop do it TODAY?

Um...what?
I don't understand what you're asking. Can you give an example?

If you mean seamless tiling images, there are a couple of tutorials here:

Photosops's 'define pattern' feature just copies exactly what's there and repeats it - if you want the bottom half of an object showing at top ( like it's going off the page) you'd have to have that in the image you define as a pattern in the first place. There are 'seamless' tile makers that might give you close to what you're looking for. Google 'seamless tile applications' or 'seamless tile software' and check them out. They'll help you make the image you then select and define as a pattern in photoshop.

Had the free trial of this one and with some images it produced good results. PhotoSEAM, editor for seamless textures (click download at top of their homepage to go to free trial)
