Photoshop CS4 Installation Question.. Please help!

Hi there, I recently got ADOBE Creative Suite 4 web premium for my computer.

However when I tried to install it, it told me that I didn't have enough RAM.

My computer is currently running on 512 MB RAM so I have to upgrade it to a 1 gig RAM.

I don't mind doing it, but as my computer is quite old, I have to get DDR1 RAM, which is quite expensive.

Like I said, I wouldn't mind doing so if I knew the answer to this question for sure:

Does Photoshop CS4 run on Windows Service Pack 2? Because that is what my computer has. I know that it says under System Requirements that it does, however when I tried to install it the first time, they listed two things that was wrong with my computer.

1) Not enough RAM
2) I don't have Windows Service Pack 3

The first one is okay, as it is true. However, the 2nd one is quite confusing. As the System Requirements says that it runs on Service Pack 2 although Service Pack 3 is recommended.

So that's my question for you guys.. Does it run on service pack 2? I don't want to spend a hundred dollars on RAM before being told that I have to go and get Service Pack 3 in order for it to run!

Please help me! Thank you!!!

CS4 does run on SP2, but I think that's not the problem that you will face.

CS4 is quite a big package that contains stuff like photoshop CS4, photoshop CS4 is a pretty heavy program since its a graphics program.

What I try to say is that I dont know your complete specs, but I do think that with a Pc that still runs on DDR1 you will get problems with slow applications and maybe even system crashes...

So my question to you: What are your specs?

I used the Photoshop CS4 Trial for a month, and didn't face much problems in terms of slow speed or system crashes so I think it should be ok??

My specs: Microsoft XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2,
Intel (R)
pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
3.00GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Thanks for the reply btw

I was more curious about you graphics card, but I think it doesn't really matter.

I'm pretty sure that with that system CS4 wont run properly... The processor is good enough, but the memory and (probably) the graphics card aren't good enough.CS4 needs a graphics card that has openGL 2.0 support, and about 1gig of free DDR2 memory... otherwise it won't run properly.

Maybe you should look into a new motherboard (or just a new PC, although the PC doesnt need to be high-end. A low-budget system probably will do the trick). If you are going for a new PC be sure to have at least these specs:

pentium dual-core (2gHz)
2gb DDR2 memory (preferably 6800)
Grpahics card: 512mb; openGL 2.0

The rest isnt really interesting for CS4

But if I just install Photoshop CS4 from the Adobe creative suite, and not the other programs, do you think it will run properly? Because the trial version ran without any problems

hmm, well you can always try

I dont think photoshop CS4 will run properly on a DDR1 system... but its worth the shot. If it doesnt work... then you know what to do

I run CS4 on a DDR3 PC (Vista 32bit, 4gb DDR3, ATI HD4870, P5E... etc) and that works fine. But a friend of mine runs it on an "old" XP DDR2 pc (XP sp2, 2gb DDR2, nvidea 8800..)

So conclusion: I dont think it will work, but I am not sure that it will not work. The only way to find out is to try! (trail and error all the way)

These are the official minumum requirements for Photoshop CS4 running in Windows (as listed on the Adobe website):
  • 1.8GHz or faster processor
  • Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 (Service Pack 3 recommended) or Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 (certified for 32-bit Windows XP and 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista)
  • 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
  • 1GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on flash-based storage devices)
  • 1,024x768 display (1,280x800 recommended) with 16-bit video card
  • Some GPU-accelerated features require graphics support for Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • QuickTime 7.2 software required for multimedia features
  • Broadband Internet connection required for online services
The minimum requirements for Creative Suite 4 Web Premium, however, are higher:
  • 2GHz or faster processor
  • Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 (Service Pack 3 recommended) or Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 (certified for 32-bit Windows XP and Windows Vista)
  • 1GB of RAM or more recommended
  • 9.1GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on flash-based storage devices)
  • 1,280x900 display with 32-bit video card and 16MB of VRAM
  • Some GPU-accelerated features require graphics support for Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0
  • Some features in Adobe® Bridge rely on a DirectX 9–capable graphics card with at least 64MB of VRAM
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • QuickTime 7.4.5 software required for multimedia features
  • Broadband Internet connection required for online services
As you can see from the above, Photoshop should run with 512MB RAM, but if your Web Premium installation is refusing to proceed due to memory requirements I don't really see what choice you have other than to increase your RAM.

Incidentally, an OpenGL-enabled video card is not required for Photoshop CS4 but some of the new "bells and whistles" (such as the Rotate tool) do require it.
