Area around cavnas in CS4

I recently upgraded to Photoshop CS4 and there seems to be a HUGE area around the actual canvas. So much so, that hitting control+home to return to the upper left corder of the canvas causes the whole canvas to move off the edge of the screen. If I turn on the ruler, I see that the "0" mark is at the edge of the canvas but the ruler continues several inches to the left. I don't know how to adjust this. It's making it hard to work with because I keep having to scroll the canvas back on the screen when I use the page keys, etc. Any ideas? I'd be very grateful.

Hi!
I'm not sure if I understand your question, but by hitting Ctrl+ home you will only return the courser to start of the story, in text. Not on an image.
If you press Ctrl+ 0 (zero) It will adjust the image to screen.
The ruler is set "0" mark at the edge of the image and the left side of the ruler is “minus”
Have a look here if you want to change
Other useful commands are: Ctrl +, Ctr-, Alt+scroll for zooming, the Tab key will disable all menus.
If your problems remain, then please try Tamlins remedy:Here

I suspect you have "Open Documents as Tabs" selected in your Preferences (Edit > Preferences > Interface). This is the default setting for CS4 and it means that all documents will be "docked" to the toolbar at the top of the screen. The advantage of this setting is that in a windowed document at 100% zoom, you can only scroll as far as the edge of the document canvas and no further, so you cannot add, say, an anchor point with the Pen tool that falls outside of the document boundary unless you first zoom out. In "Tab" mode, you can scroll as far beyond the edge of the document as you like, even at 100% zoom.
If it's causing you a problem, simply turn it off by unchecking the option in the Preferences dialog. If you leave "Enable Floating Document Window Docking" checked, you can convert a document to tabbed mode if you need to use this feature on an ad hoc basis by dragging the window up to the top toolbar until it "docks".
