How do you create shadows under an object?

Hi,

I've been trying to create a shadow on one of my products similar to the image below on photoshop cs4 but I'm not sure how to do it. If anyone has ideas let me know

Draw an oval selection.
Make a new layer.
Fill the selection with black.
Deselect all.
Filter > Gaussian Blur a bit.
Set the layer blending mode to Multiply.
Move the layer below the object.
Reduce the layer's opacity until you are happy.

There's also a drop shadow layer style, but you'd have to crop out the image so there's no white area around it.
