Tutorial Problem

I am having problems following that tutorial.
The instructions given are too brief and lacks screenshots.
From Step 7 onwards, I am totally lost.

Step 7: Select the layer/object you want to be shine-i-fied using the magic lasso tool (contiguous option unchecked if needed). Alternatively, you can use any of Photoshop's other selection techniques (there are lots of them! .

How do I do this?

If I used the lasso tool to "select the layer/object that I want to be shi-ni-fied", my previous selection with the lasso tool (Step 6) becomes unselected. Is that wrong?

Help please!

seems straight forward to me... just create a selection of what's to be shiney and then click the layer mask button. Don't worry about previous selection.

I think you should ask for another tutorial to make it more clear.It's better to ask than to make mistakes.I always have this in my mind everytime i'm doing something.
