Imitating Pencil Shading

So, it's been awhile since I've posted here. Learned a few things, still doing graphics, but being a full-time College student consumes quite a bit of free time. In any case, one of the games I play is text-based. Because of that, a lot of players like to commission or find art that represents their characters.

This is the original picture that someone else found for their character. Thing is... they wanted it bald, with a few scars and some sort of specific tattoo on the head.

I've been working on the baldness first and this is what I have. Don't worry about the ear, I can fix that. My problem is that my shading doesn't imitate the rest of the shading which appears to be done in pencil. I was wondering what I could do to better imitate the pencil shading and make it appear natural.

Also, I'll make sure he gives credit to the original artist by putting something at the bottom of the pic if he uses it. Otherwise it's simply a personal project of mine to learn from.

Personally, I feel the easiest way to get that look might be to just print it out on good paper... then just use a pencil (maybe a variety such as the h's and a b or two to get variation in the darkness of the lead) and sketch over the art in the same manner as the rest of shading was done. Then just scan it back in digitally. I don't think there is a quick fix to probably duplicate the shading style in pencil using filters etc. that would match well... especially if it was done by hand originally. You might also be able to use a Wacom tablet and play with some brush settings to mimic a pencil sketching if that is available but that still may not be exact match to what's already been done.

Um...Synth - you do realise this thread is nearly 3 months old? It was "reanimated" by softy_gal's (fairly pointless) post yesterday. The original poster hasn't been back here since January.

I was looking to see if there was an Admin option to automatically close a thread if there's been no activity for a given period of time, but I couldn't find one. Maybe (if it exists) it's something that M0g would have to set. It would be a good idea though, if it could be done.
