Probably not the most helpful thing to say, but you can't cut out what is not there ( black being the not there).

Second image broke. You hotlinked it.

If you just want to get rid of everything that's black:
  • Ensure image is on a layer (not the Background)
  • Make Black your Foreground Colour
  • Select > Color Range...
  • Play with the Fuzziness slider to refine selection area
  • Click OK when done
  • Press Delete to remove selected pixels
The attached was made with the Fuzziness slider set to 150. Your mileage may vary.

If you want to use it for a t-shirt you probably need to make it a stencil. I doubt a low quality image like this would look good on a shirt.

That's a nice solution by the way. Didn't think of that. Do you think using an alpha would work too? First make a copy, make it black and white, change levels and set it as alpha?

There are always lots of ways to do the same thing in Photoshop. The advantage of Select Color Range is that it'll work for any colour (or combination of colours) you choose and the Fuzziness control gives more control than, say, the Tolerance setting of the Magic Wand.

Yeah that obviously is helpful to see what effect the changes have before editing.

Tamlin, thank you SO much! That works a hundred times better than the magic wand, and even extract!

Yea, but magic wand tool works so much faster for simple things. Removing a background from a grungy image always is hard. Best would be to avoid it completely. You will never get a 1 on 1.
