CS4 is coming!

To my dismay... yes I say "dismay" because I was hoping it would be coming next year thus allowing me to go forth with my plan to get certified in CS3 this winter... CS4 will be coming out in October from what I hear.

One of the new enhancements I seen is the ability of Photoshop to use graphics display cards for improved speed with larger images. Reportedly, a person was able to work with 443 megapixel images in CS4 PS like it was a 5 megapixel image. Quick transitions, scrolling and such. This is interesting.

However, this could also set Mac users on fire IMHO as Mac computers typically are a little behind in video card technology. The offerings for upgrades for Macs I have seen leave two choices (256mb and 512mb) and both cards seem to either be flakey or lack longevity and tend to die after a year of use. (I think I got this info from reviews at the Apple store actually).

Windows users have long had more video card options mostly due to more drivers that were developed for Windows systems. I still believe many of the better video cards could probably work on a Mac if drivers were developed.

So... I look forward to seeing CS4 even though it will screw my career plans up a little. I do wonder if my current 128mb ATI of current will be of much help to take advantage of this new display technology in CS4 though. Will be researching this more as I find more info.

Start saving your money for October!

Dean - maybe you need to read this:
John Nack on Adobe: "Oct. 1" (aka, "Just make something up")

I think it just might come out this year. I hope not because I haven't started saving up my pennies.

As far as I'm concerned, I have what I need in what I have now. Although I'm curious to see what CS4 would be like when it actually does come out

I think they could wait another year before they release CS4.

Guess I'll stick with CS2, save some money and wait for CS4!

I've never been in favour of upgrading just for the sake of it. I was quite happy with PS7 for a long time when I was only using it to make CD artwork. When I started with digital photography I made the jump to CS2 because I'd read about the new features that were specifically targeted at that area - and which turned out to be extremely useful. I upgraded to CS3 mainly for the vastly improved Camera Raw engine and Smart filters, but now I'm quite happy - I can't honestly think of any occasion when I've thought "If only there was a tool/filter/function to do......."

Well, OK - they could improve the tone-mapping. But apart from that I see no pressing need to upgrade again.

The speed of things this past year have been real wow. A CS4 version? How about a little wait for a CS5. Still with my CS2 and glad to say still happy with it.

Every version of photoshop does have an advantage over its precessor, maybe its better filters or higher processing. But I think that drivers count as well. The amount of not used, but available modifications if pretty big.

Its like selling only HDready stuff when you have fullHD in the back of your store

I dont believe that CS4 is coming soon, CS3 is still pretty new, and is not even near out dating....

considering I seen some highlights that are going into CS4 at the Photoshop World Expo this year... and CS3 has been out for over a year now... I foresee CS4 hitting shelves either at end of this year or beginning of next year

I agree many times its not always the best move to adopt every new version of software that becomes available but there are many reasons why it is good to keep up with new editions such as... a) you work in a advertising agency where you must accept files from many different outside locations sometimes requiring you to have the latest software to deal with files created by the latest software b) the new version offers features to speed up your work flow thus saving time and money if your time is billable c) if you plan to become an educator its good to stay on top of the current software so you are always one step ahead of your students d) or the new features of the updated software allows better quality or additional creative options such as the extended version of PS which allows one to work with 3D and movies.

I really wish work here would upgrade me from CS to CS3 for several reasons... like CS3 has better selection tools which would help speed and aid the creation of clipping paths and it would allow me to select more than one layer at a time in layers palette for moving, grouping etc. and the wonderful addition of Adobe Camera Raw which in its latest update is so much better for working photos than many of the previous methods we taught back in pre CS versions.

I think it really just depends on the user and what their needs are as to when is good time to upgrade. I don't upgrade my OS every time a new one becomes available. I first decide if the new features are worth the cost in price and processor requirements. I refuse to move to Apple's new Leopard for instance and still on Tiger because even though Leopard is neat... not enough reason for me to pay the money and risk slowing my machine down with more processor intensive OS as each new OS (no matter if Windows or Mac) tends to be as they add more stuff in.
