PS CS3 won't read PNGs!

Hi!
For some reason, my Photoshop CS3 refuses to open PNGS - I get a program error message... anyone have any idea why this might be?

What does the error message say?

Prediction:
Next thing Tamlin is going to post here will include:
  • Trashing
  • Photoshop
  • Prefernces file

Ha ha - wrong!

Seriously, though: I don't think this is something that could be fixed by trashing the preferences file.

You're right, Birdtoes. I was shocked when I found this out. I just got CS 3 Suite last week, and cannot understand what Adobe was thinking. I had planned to uninstall PS Elements when I get comfortable with CS 3, but no longer will because I use PNG's a lot. Of course, Adobe Illustrator CS3 does use PNG's, but I don't want to have to learn another new program too soon. I'm afraid there is no answer to our problem except wait. They'll probably put it back in the next version.

Am I missing something here?? I've got PS CS3 and I can open PNGs just fine. Have either of you contacted Adobe Tech Support if you're having problems?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't layered PNGs only compatible with Fireworks? I don't think you can save layered PNGs in Photoshop.

well that's the thing.. you can view layered png's in photoshop
but they are just flattened...
and yes, you can't save layered png's in photoshop, layered png's are only fireworks ...as far as i know.

Ah - good. Thanks for confirming that.
Well, the OP said "my Photoshop CS3 refuses to open PNGS" but PS should still be able to open a layered PNG - even if it flattens it - shouldn't it? Unfortunately I have no way of testing this, since I don't have Fireworks.

I have photoshop CS3 and don't have any probs viewing PNG's either, it could actually be a preferences issue on install ( so maybe Tamlin is right , try Trashing the preferences )

I've been doing some research on this - or at least trying to - but it doesn't seem like a problem that's very common. One question: are you on a Windows PC or a Mac?
