You amateurs! Research my pants!
Adobe - Security Advisories : Photoshop CS2 and CS3 updates to address security vulnerabilities
Why check with random and irreliable sources, when there is the official one?

That's a patch to protect against files carrying malicious code. If you read the summary, you'll see it says
Quote:
A malicious BMP, DIB, RLE, or PNG must be opened in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements by the user for an attacker to exploit these potential vulnerabilities.
For one of these exploits to work, the affected file (not just a PNG, but possibly one of the other filetypes listed) must be opened in Photoshop. The OP's problem is that Photoshop won't open PNGs.

...which might be caused by a malicious attack made on the system in the past. I would suggest patching either ways.

I'm on a Mac - Leopard. Think that has anything to do with it? PNG's work with all my other programs.

Look in Applications//Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/File Formats
Do you see a file called Png.8bi?

If it's not there, that could be your problem.
If it is there, it may be corrupted - which may be the cause of your problem.

Either way, you could try the patch mentioned in turvas's post. It's not going to break anything, and it might even fix your problem.

Thanks, Tamlin. However, it now works! I went on the Adobe website to register and enter a question on their forum. They wanted to know exactly what the error message said. I went back to my CS 3 and tried to pull a PNG in. Well, guess what -- there was no problem. Yesterday, I was sent updates to CS 3, and I bet the fix for that problem was in the update. Hope Birdtoes has the same good luck!

Thanks turvas. I've not had a problem yet but it's good to be armed.

I use and create pngs on a daily basis in PSCS3 with no issue. They are not layered, but they work as a flattened image with a transparent bg. I would guess that you did not look over the list of accessible files when installing and that PNG's were not checked as a PS file. I made CS3 the default for png's since that is what I use to edit them most. You probably have another program set as the default for opening them. The easiest fix is to reinstall, and pay attention to the dialogue boxes instead of just clicking OK. Also, did you buy it from the store or download from Adobe? My friend's version that was bought on CD did some weird stuff while my downloaded one was fine. Even if yours is on CD you should be able to download it from Adobe as if you are getting the free trial, and then input your serial number for registration.

CS 3 Should work fine in viewing pngs, it seems your problem was fixed, but if someone else has a problem, reinstalling might fix it (unless you downloaded it). When I have had problems with a program before it often is fixed by reinstalling.

Wow - I'm not the only one this is happening to, evidently!

Of course, Adobe Illustrator CS3 does use PNG's, but I don't want to have to learn another new program too soon. I'm afraid there is no answer to our problem except wait. They'll probably put it back in the next version.

I guess that answers that question then: get a complete, legal version.
