Filigree/Victorian Art...stuff?

Hello biorust people!....so lately I've been interested in this filigree victorian style art...I guess you could also call it calligraphy (to be honest I'm not sure WHAT it's called) I first noticed it on a band HIM....I bought these books from a company called Dover but I'm still trying to figure out how to delete the white background without deleting all the detail.....But my question is how to make it (or something similar) in photoshop? I dont really feel right stealing it outta a book.....Thanks in advance for any help (or if someone even knows what the heck the stuffs called)

If you could post an example, or a link to one, it might help.

Now I see what you mean.

I think these are what in typography are referred to as "Fleurons" - ornamental borders and decorations based on flowers, vine leaves etc.

There are some fleuron fonts available, which you might find useful:

Font Freak - Dingbats F page 1
Fleuron Fonts : MyFonts

With regard to "stealing" the images from a book: are they copyrighted? If not, I wouldn't feel bad about it - you'll find that a good proportion of Photoshop brushes available on the web are made from images scanned-in from books or other similar sources. At least this way you'd be making your own brushes, rather than just downloading some pre-made ones.

To remove the white background, make sure your scanned image is on a layer in Photoshop. Select the Magic Wand tool and ensure that the Contiguous option is not checked. Click anywhere there is a patch of white background to select it. (If you have CS3, you might want to tweak the selection with the Refine Edge option.) Press Delete to remove the white background and then select Edit > Define Brush Preset... to save it as a brush.

The Books/CDs That Dover Sells Contain Public Domain Images and While the Books Are Copyrighted, Dover Allows Designer's to Use These Graphics For Personal and Commercial Ventures...You Just Can't Sell the Original Graphics.
Sincerely,
Idgie

Thank you both so much I'm gonna work on it and try to refine this to make it a border (When I deleted the background the image that was left came out very vague when placed over an image if anyone has advice for that)....Hmmmm so with Dover you can use the images so long as your not selling the original copies? weird
