Question Adobe Photoshop to Vector?

I am new to the forum and I was wondering if someone could give me some help.
I have a vinyl cutter with flexi sign starter and I have adobe photoshop. I am pretty good at photoshop and was wondering how to format an adobe photoshop file so I can import it to flexi and cut on the vinyl cutter.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

well, I am not familiar with that Flexi Starter thingie, but my best guess would be that it probably will be able to read EPS files or maybe even TIFF.

However, I am not sure about this, but it would be the direction I would look in.

Good luck.

Hi Shawn:
I also know nothing about Flexi Sign, but I did find a forum about signmaking. They have a sub-forum dedicated to Flexi - maybe you'd get a better response posting a question there. The link is: Flexi - Signs101.com

Photoshop will not output suitable vector files for Flexi. You need a true vector application such as Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, or Corel Draw.

Surely the "export paths to illustrator" function will output the right thing?

It's identical file format to an actual Illustrator saved file and I've not had issues from printers, etc before when we've submitted ai's produced in PS CS2/3.

"Export paths to Illustrator" results in an Illustrator file that has paths with no fills or strokes, so there is no color or image data, just spines. You've obviously not opened the exported file in Illustrator ever. And if you had no problems with printers, then they were rebuilding your file, at the very least, re-coloring it.

Again, Photoshop does not output suitable vector formats for Flexi as well as many other things. Photoshop is NOT and never has been a vector application. It merely has some rudimentary vector tools.

I realize many, many people really want desperately to think Photoshop can create vector content. However, it's absolutely nothing compared to a true vector application.

Without sounding sarky about it:

Yes I know it stores just the path data, not filled paths.

however, printers that have been producing line work for us are quite happy with vector path information stored within.

Illustrator does the same thing if you export the paths only, both types of export open happily in studio max as spline objects, ergo they could be used, dependent on software used, to generate shapes for laser cutting vinyl.

Work that is being used for the shape itself does not require there to be line thicknesses or fills stored within the path structure itself, since they are superfluous to the actual needs of the program being used to produce line based finished products.

I am unaware of what flexi uses, since neither myself, nor the printers I use for vinyl use it, however I was asking a valid question and do not expect to receive curt answers for something genuinely inquired upon.

And PS can create some very detailed vector work, yes it is not the primary package for vector creation, however, it is something that most people have access too, and if used correctly can produce vectors for use within other packages, which match Illustrator created ones. If you require final images to be produced within the same package however, then I agree, Photoshop should be expected to act as a limited use tool.

Photoshop is not a vector application.

Again, I fully understand your desperation to believe it is. Unfortunately it simply is not.

This is absolutely true - I've tried it myself.

They are correct, it is not a vector program, it outputs pixels, not vectors.

If you are doing your work in photoshop you can save it as a tiff file then open it with corel to print to your cutter..... also if you are cutting vinyls you really don't want to do anything complex. It needs to be shapes and text really set up in black and white for the best overall effects once cut on vinyl
