i'm not sure quite how well this would work but another way I would use is I'd make the half circles apply the layer styles to both and then at the opposite end of each half-circle I'd put a little 1pixel dot which should, in theory, spread out the layer style to cover the full area and make the circles appear to be one whole circle... May or may not work, just a though anyway

Hi all, new to the forums... I just had to post here because there is a way to do what you are asking, but it isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. I'll try to explain it, and if you can't follow, then I can create a .psd for you.
  1. Create the circle for the smily using the vector shape tool.
  2. Add a raster mask to that new layer by hitting the "Add Layer Mask" button at the bottom of the layers palette.
  3. On that mask, paint the section black that you DON'T want to show through... This would be the area under the tongue. (sp?)
  4. Apply the Layer Style you want to use
  5. Go into the layer styles dialog box, and on the initial screen, there is an option for "Layer Mask Hides Effects". Check that box
  6. Now, duplicate that layer, and invert the mask on that new layer.

You should be good to go then!
