How would I do this fire effect?

First off, I'm sorry that I don't have a good visual or a screen shot to use as a reference. But I think I can give some good examples of the effect that I'm after. What I want to do is put an invisible person on fire. If any of you are James Bond fans, there are invisible women dancing through flames in one of the more recent movies. Or another example would be taking the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four movie and giving her the Human Torch effect.

Now that I'm typing about it, it doesn't even have to be fire for that matter. An invisible person with water falling over them or smoke wrapping around them would be similar. Kevin Bacon's movie Hollow Man had both of these effects with steam in one scene and a fire sprinkler in another. I think Predator or Predator 2 had the same effect right before the Predator's camouflage short-circuited.

I've toyed with the Predator tutorial on a flame background, but I can't quite figure out where I'm going wrong. Have any of you tried something like this or have ideas for me to consider? Thanks in advance!

so are we talking about sort of invisible fire? or an invisible entity with visible fire all around?

now please bear in mind that im an amatuer, but what about using the model as a texture map to place over some flaming background and then selecting the inverse of the model and cutting away the remaining fire. lastly use the smudge tool to make the flames lick off the edges?
just a thought.
perhaps combine this with the preadator tutorial.

alas, there are gurus here more knoledgeable than I

Invisible entity with fire all around, with the licks of flame defining the boundaries of the entity.

Didn't think about smudging... going to give that a shot. Thanks!

You should try... um... It's hard to explain. You know when air reflects stuff on a hot day on a highway? That kinda thing... Not exactly flames, but kinda like just show it's very hot. Something with reflections and liquifying I think.

Is this the kind of effect you mean?

I made this by slightly tweaking the Quick Flames tutorial: BioRUST.com :: Tutorials >> Quick Flames

A mirage is what it's called.
Try the liquify filter.
