Photoshop Actions

This may be a rather broad question - but what are Photoshop Actions? I have CS3 Extended - recently upgraded from CS2 and I have no idea how to use this feature.

Thanks!

In short, it basically records step by step what happens when you're editing or doing something. You can also replay them if you record it. I do that for certain effects I get asked for a lot.
