Question Photoshop CS3 vs. Photoshop CS3 Extended

Hi,
I currently have CS2 and was thinking of upgrading to CS3 Extended but I've heard that it has many bugs. Is it a better idea to get the basic CS3? Does that version have many bugs that anyone has noticed?

Thanks,
M

Smile CS2 VS Cs3

Hi - I recently upgraded from CS2 to CS3 Extended. And while I haven't really noticed any bugs (except for the fact that it seems to take forever to close the program); there aren't all that many great new features, either.

One new feature I have found useful, is the "quick selection tool" which is part of the "magic wand" but is alot easier to control.

Have you used any of the 3D or video related features? If so, how did they work out for you?

Hi there, I have the CS3 Extended version, there are definitely a few changes from the CS2 Version, like having done away with Imageready for example, you can now do all that in the CS3. I don't know the differences between CS3 basic and extended. I got their whole "Master Collection" for my work Otherwise all the tools appear to be very similar and the whole feel of the program is about the same. One thing I do notice is that it starts a lot quicker, but I believe this is due to it not loading all the fonts on the system (I have over 2000 fonts). And I have not yet had a crash / bug

This page sums up the differences between PS CS3 and PS CS3 Extended: Adobe - Photoshop CS3 editions

As I'm just a humble picture-snapper and occasional dabbler in 3D, I didn't think I needed the extra functionality of the Extended version, and I can't say that I've felt I'm missing out on anything. I would, however, definitely recommend upgrading from CS2 to CS3 if you can. There are a number of neat new features that come in useful for most PS users (the Quick Selection Tool as mentioned by shandy9 is just one example).

Thank you guys very much for the input. I'm definately going to upgrade to CS3. The good thing is that I found out that my MX 2004 Studio can be upgraded to CS3 Design Premium so I'll be able to get all of my software upgraded to CS3 in one shot. Photoshop CS3 Extended is included so I guess I'll be getting that version.

Not too long before Photoshop becomes an all-in-one program. Digital art, animation, painiting, 3d... You know.

Cs2 Brushes

i'm new to photoshop and I have cs2, i'm thinking of upgrading to CS3 but I was wondering; would I have to reload all my brushes? I've got a large number of great brushes I would hate to lose.

thanks

I don't think upgrading would remove your existing brushes, but just to be on the safe side, copy the .ABR files from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS2\Presets\Brushes to a temporary folder elsewhere. Once you've upgraded, copy them back into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS3\Presets\Brushes. The same applies to other presets you want to retain.

I have CS3 Extended. It's really meant to provide extras for video, animator, and research pros. For me the extras are just curious toys to feed my inner geek. I'm a fan of the TV show "CSI", so I like the tools it has that can be used for forensic analysis . . .

Good to know what it does before picking it up. Doesn't seem theres much I'd even use the extensions for.

I'm interested in the comment about CS3 being slow to shut down. That isn't my experience at all and it is faster loading IMO.
