Dimensions of a website

Basically all I know now is that I have to create a website for a class at school. The teacher hasn't really provided us with any details. With less than three weeks and along with other assignments, I want to get a head start. I don't know where to begin. What should be the generally width when I create the basic interface in photoshop?

thanks in advance

its usually better to keep it smaller, 800x600, no bigger than 1024x768 because most people dont have 19" monitors running at high resolutions, and scrolling, especially side scrolling, is very poor design. so just try and keep it short and sweet

The standard development size is at 800x600, for best grading for this, stick to the resolution that your school computers run at.. so it looks the best.

These web resources should help ya:

http://www.webstyleguide.com/page/dimensions.html
http://mdp.artcenter.edu/~vanallen/w...eb1_wk04a.html

The sizes do differ from browser to browser and OS to OS, so use the recommendations above with a pinch of salt. Whereever possible, avoid going right up to the pixel limit, and you should be just fine...
