Need help recreating

First off I would like to introduce myself, I am Drew and I'm new to this site. In the little time I have spent here I have found it to be very informative and helpful.

There is one thing however I do seek help with. I'm not a professional graphic designer, but for past several years have taken a liking to it, I create things that pop up in my mind or try to recreate graphics I find intriguing. Which leads to my problem, for the past several months I have tried to recreate this logo from the local ABC affiliate, nothing seemed to hard about it, until I tried to recreate the number 8, if anyone can help me I would be must obliged and thankful!

the one on the left is their new logo, while the one on the right is their old logo. I personally like the the old one (right), because it shows more detail and shall I say spunk. Which everyone though you can help me out on would be great, I'm not going to be picky at this point in time.

Thanks in advance!
Drew

well Drew, to be honest this 8 is done in 3d, or at least it looks like it to me...

but if you want to try it just strictly with photoshop, i would try the "chrome effects"

i'm sure any google search would find you much more tutorials.

here's a start

If you used this tutorial, you could probably setup a bevel that outlines the 8 and add more chrome effects to the bevel layer on it's own to simulate what you see in your original 8 you are trying to copy.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck

You can do this in Photoshop with a Layer Style. I just experimented for a few minutes and came up with the attached. I've also attached a ZIP file containing the style I created so you can try it out for yourself - it might need a little tweaking to get the exact effect you want.

Talking Breakthrough!!!

First off I want to thank the both of you for the tremendous help you have provided. I started messing around with the style in which Tamlin so thoughtfully provided me with. when I had an idea pop into mind. I played around with that idea alittle bit and you can see the result I got with the accompanied attachment, not exactly identical, but getting there. I'll have to get a tutorial together and explain how I did it.

Again thank you both so much for your help, I guess if I could say anything that I have learned from this, it would be persistence pays off, and never be to proud to ask for help!

Thanks again!
Drew

Man, I really need to tinker with layer styles more often. Not only does this one that Tamlin whipped up fit the bill, but it looks awesome to boot.
