CS2... JPEG file size discrepancy?

Prior to upgrading to CS2 last summer, I was running PS7. Back then, I recall that when I would go to save PSD files to JPG format, I would set the format options to "Progressive", the scans to 5 and then adjust the quality with the slider bar. Doing so would adjust the file size shown at the bottom of the JPEG options window, and it would be pretty accurate. If it said the file was going to be 37k / 6.2s @ 56.6 Kbps, that was awfully close to the final file size as viewed by windows explorer. But now, in CS2, I use the same settings when I save in PS, but when I view the directory in explorer, the file sizes are typically in the mid-50k range instead of the 37k shown. What gives? As is, the JPG's are going to medium quality. I don't want to take them lower if I don't have to.

Can't think of any reason for the apparent discrepancy, other than perhaps CS2 uses a different method to PS7 when performing a "Save As" operation. Perhaps you would have more luck with the Save for Web... option (even if you are not actually planning on using your JPGs on the web). This gives you a lot more control over the JPG options, and also includes an indicator of final file size which is accurate - I know this because I just tested it.

Yes, "Save for Web" makes smaller JPEGs 'cause it doesn't embed unnecessary metadata.

Thanks, guys. Tonight is the first that I've done any sigs since starting this thread, and yes, "save to web" did the trick. Now to just make sure this old dog remembers to use this new trick. hahaha
