the pen tool. actaully for logo creation i'd recommend illustrator if you've got that handy.

I agree with Evdawg - the pen tool may be a git to master at first, but its the best tool to use for logos. You could perhaps get away with using a subtractive method with the marquee tool, but its fiddly and doesn't give you an easily resizable shape (since it'll be raster and not vector based).

Illustrator, definately. I basically don't touch Photoshop when working with "proper" logos, unless I have to implement a photography in the logo somehow. And even then, I use Photoshop only reluctantly.

It's very hard to see, but I think he/she was aiming for some kind of ancient book cover... There are some little patterns in dark area like an imprint...

I know what the logo looks like. I might just go and make one myself with a pen tool

Giwen,

I played around with the logo you provided in Photoshop 7 and was able to create a decent looking logo. The following is detailed instructions on how I did it. If the info is not detailed enough, then PM me and I will provide more detail. If it is too detailed, then forgive me....I'm not sure how familiar you are with Photoshop 7 and would rather over explain than under explain. Hope some of this information is helpful to you.

I took your jpg and I inverted the image under Image>adjustments>Invert. This allowed me to bring out the background detail. Then I went to Edit>Define Brush. Now open a new blank image under File>New. I used 640 x 480 with a white background. With this new window open, I chose a new layer by clicking on Layer>New>Layer. I then went to my brush tool and chose the brush that I defined earlier. On this new layer that I created, using the color black, I positioned the brush in the middle of the window and clicked 15 times. This is to get a dark enough image to select…..make sure you don’t move your mouse while doing this. I then went to Select>Load selection. You should now have moving dashed lines outlining the details of your image. Now go to your layers palette and click on the paths tab. Click on the “Make work path from selection” icon. It looks like a circle with two appendages and it is located at the bottom of the palette. You can switch back to the layers tab and click on the little eye and make the layer invisible. This allows you to see the paths. If they are as you want, then go to Edit>Define Shape. If it needs work, then you can use the pen tool to adjust the paths before you define the shape.

Now open a new blank image and create a new layer as before. Click on the shape tool and select your newly created shape. You can now use this tool to make any size of the logo you need. Apply any color, textures and shading you want at this point.

I assumed you wanted the background detail of the image you provided. If you don’t want the background detail, just use the eraser tool after the image is inverted to erase the background detail….then define the brush and proceed as before.

There are probably other ways to do the logo in photoshop, but this was what worked best for me. Hope this was helpful.
