Filter Problems

Okay, new problem. This has been bugging me from the beginning but I thought I'd post it now for some reason. Anywho, on a normal photoshop you'd have a whole bunch of filters right? I only have 4 right now. My version isn't that old so I don't know why I don't have all the other ones I'm supposed to have. My brother has the exact same version as me but he has at least 20 more filters than I do. Here's a screenshot...

They are already in my filter folder which is inside my plug-in folder which is allll inside my Photoshop folder so I'm not too sure what's going on.

Oh and FYI, I have Photoshop 8 I think. CS8 or something 8. I just know mine is some sort of version 8. xD

Thanks for all you're help!

Hi,
Check your pic's color depth (Image > Mode > ...). In PS 8, most filters only applicable to "8 Bits/Channel" images.

Hi pirate.
Your screenshot did not upload for some reason, so i cant see what you are looking at atm.
If you think you are missing features you should try to install your photoshop again.
You could do this by just installing your disk again over the previously installation.. if this did not work, try uninstalling and reinstalling again.

Is it possible your looking in the wrong place for them?
are they packed inside of your filter gallery folder?

Hey pirate. Are the filters not in the list? Or are they in the list, but most of them grey? That's an important issue.

Turvas is absolutely right: if they're not in the list at all, then you've got them in the wrong place. If they are in the list but greyed-out, it means they're not available for whatever image or layer is currently active.

Okay. I think my screenshot works now. In my screenshot you can see that I have only 5 filters in total, and a picture isn't even uploaded yet. In this new screenshot, you can see where they are as far as folders go. I'm pretty sure they're in the correct spot but I'm not completely sure. Thanks for all you're help so far guys!

open up a file or start a "new" file...

because you have nothing to edit they won't be available.

Hmm...I don't think that's the problem here: it's not that the default filters aren't available - they should still appear in the pull-down menu, even with no document loaded (although they will be greyed-out). What puzzles me is that you seem to be missing some other options from the Filter menu, too. Even with no document loaded, my Filter menu looks like the attached screenshot.

The blue-highlighted options refer to changes in CS2, but your menu should have all the non-highlighted options as standard in CS.

Maybe your install of Photoshop has become corrupted in some way. As a first step, I would try deleting your Photoshop preferences file. If that doesn't work, it might mean a re-install.

oh dang, yeah i totally missed that

my bad, yes i would reset your preferences as well

you can do this when you load up your photoshop, press and hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift buttons until you get prompted to “delete the Photoshop settings file”, Click yes

and you should be reset.

if it's still having issues, then i would suggest a reinstall, as Tamlin's mentioned, it could be a corrupted file of some sort and a reinstall may fix it

good luck, and god speed

I may sound dumb, but I don't know how to delete/ reset the Preferences. I try the CONTROL+ALT+SHIFT thing but nothing comes up. Is there another way to change them?

Read this: creativepro.com - Photoshop Tips: Trashing the Preferences File
It should answer your question about resetting preferences.
