Help with masking please!

I am a newbie to graphic design and need some help with Photoshop masking, saving and exporting to Illustrator.

The deal is I am creating an 'Owl' in Illustrator for a Uni project due tomorrow and it's feathers look shocking (i tried to make them). So now I've downloaded a great photoshop CS2 'feather' brush but don't know how to go about saving the feather so that it can be used as a symbol in Illustrator?

I have masked the feather from the background in Photoshop but each time I save it the background is included when I open it in Illustrator. How do I export it into illustrator without the background?

if you used your feather in a seperate layer you can save layers to files,
ie ever layer can be saved as its own image with the push of the button using scripts..
file-script-export layers to files

I'm not sure if this will help, but if you have an image with a transparent background in photoshop and you want to import it into Illustrator without the white background, you have to save the file as a .PSD first, and then import it from the menu system in Illustrator...

This is the only way I've managed to import raster images into Illustrator without a background.
