These look good Marj, thanks. I have been searching for some very specific tuts in CS2 that I just don't find anywhere. If you run across them plz let me know, list below.

Creating dimensional backdrops and cast shadows to create studio portrait effects.

Creating deckled edges in CS2

Simulating reflections using bevel and emboss

Creating a layout with masks and clipping groups in CS2

Simulating candlelight and studio lighting in CS2

Using contrast masking

And a few other very specific artistic effects and overlays.

Bedlam:
Here's a very quick mini-tutorial on contrast masking:
  1. Duplicate your original image (Layer > Duplicate Layer)
  2. Desaturate the duplicate layer (Image > Adjustments > Desaturate)
  3. Invert the duplicate layer (Image > Adjustments > Invert)
  4. Change the Blending Mode of the duplicate layer to Soft Light
  5. Apply some Gaussian Blur to the duplicate layer (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur). Start with a small radius and gradually increase it until the detail starts to become clearer.
  6. If the shadows have become a little wishy-washy, add a Levels adjustment layer at the top of the stack (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels) and boost the blacks.

For a more dramatic effect, you can use Overlay instead of Soft Light in step 4. Job done!

I'd like to be able to claim credit for this technique, but I learnt it from Tim Shelbourne's Photoshop Photo Effects Cookbook.

I've also got a tut for candlelight somewhere - I'll see if I can find it.
